Another silly poll, great, TBers should pactice more, I have never seen so many stupid post, on such pointless topics, just sayin.
Originally went with special shapes because I like the RIC inlays, but then switched to carrots because I realized I like block and dots too.
I've thought a lot about it, and the guys at Bass Emporium & I were gonna do it:
Frets 1, 3, 5, & 7 get dollar sign inlays. All fret makers after that are big red X's.

Generally none. But if I can get a single fancy shiny bling bling on the 12th fret that's awesome.
I picked blocks. But honestly, it just depends. Some look better with blocks, some dots, some look better with nothing. Like if I had my dream J bass, it would have an ebony board with nothing on it. But a Ric wouldnt look right without it's spike/block things. It just depends.

I wasn't aware that Vinny was the inlay specialist at Spector in the early days.
I custom ordered a birdseye maple NS-2 with Roman numeral inlays from Spector in '81 or '82 when they were still offering custom inlays. Wish I still had that bass.
I'm also a fan of the crushed pearl inlays on early Rics. The boomerang inlays on some of the Hamer guitars & basses were quite handsome as well.
It depends on the bass I guess. Exotic inlays on a Fender would look out of place to me, blocks are cool, but only on a handful of instruments.
Spector, ric, Jackson, Ibanez all have cool custom markers, but they aren't that flexible, but work great for their instruments.
I'd probably do some custom inlay work on a botique bass if I was having one built, and design it myself, but on others it would be too much.
Dots are universal, blocks are sexy, but carrots are forever.
I voted for carrots.

It's not that simple. It all depends on the bass its attached to, and the fretboard material.
I like dots and blocks, but the crescent moon inlays on my SG guitar are pretty freakin' sweet.
