Polytope vs Moogerfooger Ring Mod

Has anyone used both the Iron Ether Polytope and the moogerfooger mf102?

I am more interested in the subtle tones and not the extremes. I used to have a mf102 that I used on a fretless that was an AMAZING vibrato. But before I buy one, the Polytope really caught my eye...

Are you sure you mean the Ring Mod? They are totally different effects, and ring mod is almost never subtle. You're probably thinking of the Clusterflux.

Edit: As I re-read your post, you say you used to have a MF102, and used it as a vibrato... I guess it just strikes me strangely because it's like using a howitzer to drive nails.

I guess the MF102 on slow settings act like a tremolo - tremolo and vibrato get mixed up quite a deal.

It depends on if you want true vibrato (pitch modulation) or tremolo (called vibrato on some guitar-amps). The Polytope does pitch vibrato, chorus etc. While the Moog does tremolo and ring-modulation (kind of like tremolo, but switching at audio-speed, causing some very dissonant tones)

I bought and sold the mf102 twice. I wish I could give some sound clips. But I did mean the ring mod and I did mean vibrato. It is capable of a very lush chorus -like sound with a variable "pulse ". Thanks for the feedback, I'd love to hear more comparisons.

Personally I'd pick the power convenience of the Polytope over the MF-102.

+1 ... I really liked my Moog Ring Mod, but I ended up selling it because I didn't like the extra power adapter and it took up to much pedalboard real estate.

I'd say since you already have an idea of what the MF102 can do, try the Polytope. I haven't tried one myself, but everyone here seems to love it. And if you end up not liking it, it wouldn't be that hard to resell here. Iron Ether stuff sells pretty quick here on TB.
