Pork loin or DK vmt?

i had both of those ... they're gone now ... and you don't want to know what replaced them for that specific job ...!??

pork lion will need the inner pots accessible to dial it in ....

they both seemed to come on a little to easily for me , even with passive basses ... it was hard to get the input gain level at the sweet spot ... for me ..

I'm well aware of the gain structure differences and how they vary from bass to bass and amp to amp.
I guess the best way to put this is, which one is more front end tube friendly?

Had both. Sold both. I liked the Loin better. If I recall correctly, I may have even had it when I had a Walkabout. For subtle, I'd go Loin (of the options here). However, I've heard nice recordings of the VMT, but nothing I could replicate.

Curious how you narrowed it down to these two, they're both pretty different sounding pedals.

Both can be subtle depending on how you've set the gain and drive, but the PL is a bit darker and the VMT more midforward.

Both great pedals, just very different flavors.

I know you asked for no other suggestions, but if you're looking for subtle OD the Barbershop is worth considering as well :thumbsup:

I dug both of them. The Pork Loin is a bit darker (there's a simple mod to open it up) and generally just adds a bit of hair to your tone. The VMT has more color to it.

I didn't find either to be very touch sensitive if that's a consideration.

The Pork Loin was harder to dial in to me (lots of controls) and the VMT easier but I didn't like the first half of the Era knob - too muffled for me.

FWIW I eventually sold both.

A pedal builder on these forums with an axe to grind regarding DG.

Smart guy, builds cool clones and comes up with useful mods, but for some reason is very emotionally invested in trashing DG (and often the people who like their gear).

Pork Loin would be my recommendation, it's a nice pedal.
As others have mentioned, I find Darkglass pedals overly aggressive, expensive and way over hyped.
I have owned over 200 pedals and Darkglass is one of the very few I did not like at all.
That being said, the company is a rising star in the pedal world and legion of people really dig their stuff.

IMO, this is only a "concern" if bought second-hand. Way Huge has changed the value of that cap and it's now very close to the value suggested by the John K mod.

Also good to know, the PL can safely run on +18V to get more headroom. With my basses, it sounded overly harsh at +9V (even with the drive knob rolled off completely), but at +18V it's just perfect for my basses and what I do.

Didn't know the PL could do 18v. Might have to try that.

I vote PL. It just seems to work in so many situations. I have no experience with the VMT, though it's on my list for a potential PL replacement. Not that I dislike the PL in any way, just that I imagine they would have similar tones. A modded PL just sounds amazing when you dial it in. The VMT (and DG overall) have a baked in tone some love and others hate. I love my B3K, but see no compelling reason to replace my PL with a VMT, unless I get a steal on it.

Anyway, PL seems to be the safer bet, while still being a great pedal. I'd recommend the mod if possible. The VMT is also solid, but being much more expensive and more divisive, I'd at least try PL first. You can find it used easily, and if it's not to your liking, flip it for cost and put the money to a VMT.

Gonna sub this just for the VMT/PL comparisons since I have long wondered if I should try the VMT for a similar tone.

It's really not an exaggeration at all, he absolutely hates DG pedals. He even spoke up a few months back on a similar "I'm looking for a subtle OD" thread and said that anyone who thinks DG gear sounds anything like a tube amp has never played through a tube amp before, and that it irritates him that they even use the word "tube" on their products.

He quickly got defensive and then announcing that he was leaving the thread.

"Metered" it was certainly not ;)

Ironically enough, the graph of the "flawed" EQ (wide boost around 100Hz, narrow cut around 300hz, boost around 2.5kHz) in his caustic review of the original B3K is actually what sold me on it in the first place.

Pork Loin! I have a Saucy Box which is basically a Pork Loin with fewer controls and it works beautifully for subtle light OD, especially at band volume. The VMT is awesome, but I didn't like it enough to buy one...yet. I'm sure I'll add a VMT to the arsenal when the hype dies down and the used prices get more "justifiable" haha.
