Thats business, they can't buy them for the same price that you can get on a private sale, as they need to make a profit, and to sell it on, they'd have to offer it for the going rate, and buy it for so much less, shops tend to want to make a profit, you know...
Its not like they're forcing anyone into selling them their instruments, just giving you an option, plenty of people on TB try much worse lowballs, and thats a fact.

I'm not sure what they do with trade-ins, but for cash, they will offer you half of the whatever they are going to sell it for.
Like J says, sell it here on TalkBass instead, that way you can take the full 100% of the used value by selling it yourself.

So I have the high-output J pup, a three-way switch and shielding tape. As far as wiring, pots and such, what do I need? I'd assume a 250K pot (StewMac is out of stock on this) and chrome barrel knob for the bridge volume. I'm going to drill out a side-jack, but will I be able to use the existing jack if I get an oval side-mount jackplate? Or will I need a new jack?
Can any wiring gurus help me diagram how to incorporate the switch, the jack, and the VVT pots? Thanks!

You can use whatever kind of jack you prefer.
Personally, I like deep panel jacks.

Yes its a big trade. But I really don't have the time to be haggling back and forth about trades or cash for weeks then worry about shipping nahh. All those basses are or will be collecting dust and If I didn't want the TF bass I would give them or donate to local high school. Some of them still have the pickguard plastic on them still

Thanks for the quick reply, Line. Could you (or anyone else) explain a bit more about how to interpret and physically make the connections? It kinda makes sense, but I'm not sure.
I can see where each pups hot comes in, but where do I solder the grounds to? I'm guessing that the three way I have is a Strat/Tele. Do I just use a jumper wire for that blue connection? The bottom one is the tone pot, right? What does the orange represent? Sorry to ask so many questions, but this is my first surgery (on a bass...I've done lots on people - but they're different)

Plenty of people have asked similar questions, don't worry about it.
As far as the grounds, do you plan to do any shielding?
If you are on a shielded P bass pickguard, the pots and output jack should already be connected to each other through the shielding tape on the pickguard. If not, you would need to run a wire across the back of each pot, running to the output jack's sleeve terminal.
Yes, jumper the blue connections together. I do the connection in blue for visual clarity.
Yes, the bottom pot is the tone control.
The orange component is a capacitor.
I did my capacitor graphic like the Orange Drop caps, because that's what I use myself, but your capacitor doesn't have to be the same. You may have a ceramic capacitor resembling a tan disk, or a metalized film capacitor, resembling a piece of green Chiclets gum.

That's exactly why I'm wanting to do it! I can't really learn very well just by reading. My hands have to get dirty to really learn this. I'll never be a luthier, but troubleshooting and modification should be in my toolbox of skills.
I concur. And they will be in mine one day, but with a bass like this that I love this much, I just cant see myself doing it and messing something up.. Ya know? Its worth the cash to keep it in working order.

Sounds bloody fantastic, ,if the J was somewhat higher output, I'd keep it, espcially like the mixed tone, and definatly love that I can now hit harmonics.

The routing of the body is done, and the neck plugs are in. All that is left is the redrilling of the neck, electronics, and the sealing of new routes.

Mine's pretty much finished, switch is in, and I have the pickups well balanced, both volumewise and tonally, don't even think I'll bother with the Barden J after Christmas.
