Possible Tony Franklin Tribute

If I go the PJ route with my Fender, EMGs will most likely be the pickups I use. Bernie Bauer, the bassist for Big Organ Trio who is one of my all time favorite bassists, bands, and a great friend, uses EMGs. Killer tone.

I have actually played his bass, too! Phew, now thats a P bass!

I think, in the new year, once I have the EUB squared away(one in metallic black on order), I'ma pick up one of them gunmetal grey Squier P/J's, and follow suit with some EMG P/J's, but wire it vol-tone-3way, like I done with the fretless above.

That maple thread was the final straw about keeping my MIA P.. It feels soo darn good, I just miss the availability of more tones like my Geddy used to have.

My P, IMO, has treble off, treble on.. ;)

With the PJ setup, there are sooo many more setups. If Mike does good work on my fretless, I think I might have him do my Fender too.. Man, I miss my fretless! :D

Its a killer look, too, and I bet the sound is slamming, I know what you mean about the treble on/off deal, I just never turn mine off! :D

The Fender might be fantastic as a P/J, in fact, I'm sure it would be.

I know what you mean about the fretless, when my Traben was the only fretless I was playing, I gave it to a luthier to work on, and setup, and while it was only a week or two, it was near heartbreaking, even though I knew the work was gonna be world class.

I'm doing pretty much the same thing as J.Crawford & Engine207 here! Apart from refinishing :D
Got a cheap Hondo II P Bass copy (Not a Fender, but oh well) and am going to route out a hole for a bridge pup & turning it into a fretless.
Not going for a direct Tony Franklin, but perhaps we could share some pointers along the way?

These are the parts I'm using:
Pickups: Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound P & J
Bridge: Gotoh 201 Chrome
Tuners: Allparts J bass style

Here's what I've got so far..
(I'm fabricating that pickguard out of aluminium)

Yeah, a few.

1. STC-2 preamp shorted outsn so my electronics changed to VVT3way
2. The bass is done, other than a 3 way mini switch which arrives today. I went mini instead of blade as it was cheaper, and makes mine a bit more me.
3. Ill have ie before school on Monday, I hope!

I think they're commercially available (like at Stewmac and like that), but I made my own out of a piece of scrap wood. It's designed to be in the 70s position and screws right into the bridge screw holes. I'll post photos to the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] account this evening.

I'm pretty much finished routing, but I still need to get the sticky-sided foam insert that goes under the pickup so I can determine the precise depth for the route. Once I get that spec, I'll make the final cut. Then, hopefully tomorrow, find some pots and knobs and such locally, so I can knock out the electronics on Thursday.

After talking with my dad, I've decided to route with the "drill-mill" at his work.
It hasn't got the same rpm as a router (3000rpm vs. about 8000+rpm) but I did a "trial-run" on a block of wood and I seemed to get a nice cut.
So no need for a template anymore.
Yea I'm not sure of the cutting depth either...
I'm sure the depth of the p pup hole would be the right depth..

Probably, but not certainly. It depends on the depth of your j pup and the foam density. If you assume on the depth and you route too deep, you'll need to cut a shim to make up the difference. It's easier just to have the spec or the pup first.

Yeagh...that piece of foam provides the resistance (not electrical) against which the screws hold the pup, allowing the user to adjust the height. Other height adjustment systems (like my Ric) use springs for resistance.
