Certainly the most convenient place to carry a hat is on your head.
Me, I don't wear cowboy hats for two reasons: 1) Something about my head shape and neck (huge head, tall head, long skinny neck on a not very tall person) makes me look goofy in them; 2) I sweat like Niagara Falls, and so any hat I wear is permanently sweat-stained in about 20 minutes if I wear it outside in hot weather (the reason for wearing a broad-brimmed hat). The el cheapo from Tractor Supply would be the only reasonable choice, but my wife is convulsed with hysterical laughter when I put one on, and I can't have her at risk that way, she might get choked. So instead I wear a broad brimmed working hat of straw (I don't know the term for it, but it's what I think of as "a farmer's hat" which has both more brim width and doesn't look quite as goofy as a cowboy hat on me). If I worked outdoors all day, I'd use what I've got and I'd probably go through a couple a year as they'd just get so nasty from sweat. I notice a lot of outdoors workers these days have hats with not only broad brims but also a sort of hang down cloth around the back and sides; think of a mixture of Arab headdress and cowboy hat.
People who worked in the fields have always known to keep the sun off; now a lot of other people are starting to realize that they had it right all along.
You look good in the photo, but that looks like a felt to me.
In the photo associated with the OP, I notice the bass player (the guy with the Rickenbacker in a country band) is wearing something more like what I wear for work outdoors in the sun. It isn't a traditional cowboy hat at all.
