Very cool. Is a PDA version of the site one of them? I know that's been talked about before and would be a very cool implementation, IMO.

If you really think about it, this thread belongs in the Customer Service / Suggestion Box / Forum Usage issues section rather than OT since its about the running of TB generally. Since it really belongs there, all those valuable posts from Mike, BrYan and Maki should actually count towards their post-count rather than being of a "lesser value" than a "+1" in basses. ;)

i was thinking the same thing, actually, and was about to move this over there.

Since it really belongs there, all those valuable posts from Mike, BrYan and Maki should actually count towards their post-count rather than being of a "lesser value" than a "+1" in basses. ;)

the thing is though, it depends on how one measures post value. see, in the directly music-related forums, posts are assigned value in two ways - incrementing the post count, which shows the post to be of value to the site itself, and, of course, through the number of views and responses, which shows the post to be of value to one's fellow members.

in OT, only one of those value measurements now applies - the interraction of the community relating to each post. of course, this is the most important measure of value to any discussion forum post, but still, its only one.

moving it to the suggestion box, however, will change this, in that while it might increment the post counts (only for posts made while it is in the new forum, from the time it was moved onward, though - counts for existing posts do not get changed when posts or threads are moved into or out of OT, only if they are deleted), the thread being in the suggestion box does not guarantee the 2nd point of measure, that of being it read and responded to. :hiding:

I just come to TB to talk a line of **** with a bunch of people I've never met. Some of the people I've never met I would consider to be friends, but keeping a running tab on how much **** I talk really holds no interest for me.

I think that everyone has posted valid points both pro and con, but at the end of the day my interest level in the subject remains low.

It's Paul's bat and Paul's ball. I just want to play.

Actually, I think posts in the Customer Service Forum should also not be added to postcount.

Since it has nothing to do with basses/bassists/music/gear.

I support TalkBass for two reasons:

(1) I sell (and buy) a lot of gear and I need to be able to start threads in the classifieds.

(2) My personal policy is not to read any posts by people without avatars. They just don't carry as much weight. And that being the case I don't want to be seen as a hypocrite by people without avatars. Of course, I don't read their posts, so it's all just goes in circles.

I'm glad to know that my 33 years playing bass and 43 years playing an instrument carry no weight with you either. Apparently, you're in the Moderator Candidate School.

I do support TB for the classifieds but the other reason is simply that I dig this place. In all honesty, the only thing my post count ever tells me is that I probably spend too much time on this site.

And I suppose I don't post as much in OT these days, so if it wasn't already apparent from the dripping sarcasm, I don't actually care whether someone has an avatar or not. The only thing avatars are good for is that when I read particularly thoughtful or insightful posts from someone it makes it easier to remember their username for future reference.

just to clarify the current situation re: off topic posts, all current off topic posts made before the announcement by paul still count toward one's post count total. there are no plans that i am aware of at changing that (i.e. recounting members' posts and making a new total with OT posts excluded).

only posting in OT or the lobby going forward will not increment post counts further.

just fyi.

I got my first supporting membership around this time last year for these two reasons, the 2nd moreso than the first, as I dont have much money, or anything really to sell. If you look at my feedback I have a total of 1 (at 100% mind you!), and that was from a trade I made. I did happen to sell my bass cab via the classifieds (that buyer hasnt left any feedback, but since I probably wont be selling anything else via TB I dont really care).

So in actuality I really only paid so that I could get an avatar so that people in OT would recognize me. I think thats a little silly, really. $20 just for a little square jpg. I think everyone has the right to an avatar, if only for easy identification purposes.

My dues are up soon, Im sure. I'm pretty broke, being as I just moved into a place with my girlfriend and have rent to pay, as well as a speeding ticket. I most likely wont be a supporting member soon. Despite the whole post count issue I will still come to TB to mingle with my bass playing brethren. I like this place, regardless, and Im often bored at work.

Will I cough up some cash when I have a little extra dough in the future? Maybe, if only cuz I like having an avatar.

That being said, you all know where I stand on this issue, and I probably dont have much more to say in regards to it.I
