Here's a few pix from my gig on Tuesday at the Fryeburg Fair in Maine. This fair was first held in March 1851, and is the state's largest agricultural fair. I've played there for 15 consecutive years, mostly with my own (Al Hospers) band and sometimes with others as well. Most of the bands there play country, bluegrass or the like. We play funk, rock and some jazz plus do a bunch of my originals. I like to say that "we play a lot of the tunes you know and love, but you won't recognize them." [wry grin] The sax player runs the music program at Fryeburg academy, drummer is music director at local middle school, guitarist teaches at Plymouth State College and piano player tunes pianos. The players are hands down the best musicians in the area and we basically jam. The audiences always dig it and appreciate that we love what we do and love when we interact with each other. There were 60-70 people just sitting and watching us jam through the entire 3 sets. We started our second set with a very uptempo version of A Train that started with sax and drums duo. Everybody gets a solo, the guitarist totally took it over the top and the audience went crazy! Then we followed that with Use Me Up that eventually slipped into a Santana groove jam in the middle that was crazy and people really dug and we eventually brought it back around into the original tune as we always do.
Check out the minimal gear on stage. I'm playing through a Streamliner and single Revsound 112 cabinet, guitarist uses a Deluxe and piano just a Twin. We use a single main PA speaker and monitor because I have NO interest in playing really loud. The featured band on the main stage was Marshall Tucker. They started at 8:15 pm right after we were done. My understanding is that they were incredibly loud and not very good. Go figure...
PS this band plays 2-3 times a month in the area.

My god, what a ridiculous judgement of how others run their gigs.
I'll never understand the TB'ers that feel the need to tell others what they're doing wrong on their own gigs. How did we ever manage to get return gigs without such sage advice?
