Post your EXTREME MUSIC effects !

l_30486b5e8267205d451ef65faa32a40e.png

i guess it can't get more extreme than this?! or can it??? we will see in my next update ;)

I stopped using my 5 stringer or even detuning to play metal.
A 4 string and the EHX Octave Multiplexer do a much better job.

It's a style in which I almost only play single notes, lows are huge and fat, the filter allows for fuzzy, agressive highs, I get access to a low E and the electronic tone of the octave blends in perfectly with triggered kick drums.

thanx all for posting....I-m also curious what u think about using more than 1-2 overdrive/distorsion effects together ? its usefull or not ?
what do u think about using synth effects on bass in metal music ?
thanx and stay low :)

You mean using 2 different OD/Dist pedals at the same time (on) or having 2 OD/Dist pedals on the board? I have an Ibanez PD7 (dist) and MXR Bass Blowtorch (fuzz) both on my board. I've messed around with them both on at the same time and it just sounds like mush. But they do have 2 completely different tones, so they will remain on the board.

I've gotten a great synth tone with chorus and fuzz together. Sure, you can use a synth tone in metal...why not?

re: the question about phasers for metal.

back at a point when I was playing a lot of 80's goth inspired stuff (not metal mind you, think sisters of mercy, siouxsie & the banshees) someone recommended using a phaser to help get a "creepy dark sound". I went out and got a vintage phaser -- Orange Ross Phaser, to be exact -- plugged it in and... crap. Total crap. If anything it sounded like lite-funk. With the regenerate knob turned all the way up it sounded like a crappy chorus pedal. Now i'm not trying to say all phasers are bad or wouldn't work for metal, (small stone is kinda neat, actually) but the one I had made everything sound decidedly un-heavy and un-dark.

Flangers, on the other hand, can sound amazing when mixed with distortion, OD, or fuzz... my boss flanger excels at that metallic jet-plane sound, which works particularly well for industrial. All of the above is IMHO, as always.

Two overdrives that both are on? Nah, not very useful in most situations, IMHO. For different sounds, though, most def. I use both the MXR Blowtorch and the B:ASSMASTER, and they produce very different sonic output, so to speak.

Stacking overdrive/distortion pedals may or may not work depending on the song/part. I use an "always on" overdrive, and when I kick in my fuzz I don't bother to turn off the OD. As long as your fuzz isn't one of those that needs to be first in the signal chain for impedence reasons (wooly mammoth, fuzzface, etc.), then there's no harm in stacking an OD or distortion before it. I wouldn't do it for "warm overdrive" or whatever, though.

Synth effects also depends on the band/song/part. I use them a lot, but I think they would probably be out of place in a death metal or hardcore band. Give it a shot; your bandmates will tell you if it's not working.

When combining distortions, it totally dependson the pedals, as some work really well together. I have a Line6 LD300 amp which has an Ampeg model in it, and when the gain is turned up past midway, it sounds horrible, flat and mushy with no note definition, and overly compressed. I also have a Humphrey modded Bad Monkey, and I don't really like the sound of it through a clean amp... but when combining these things together, it's the meanest, squelchiest tone I've ever heard, it's so touch sensitive it sounds like it's alive. I am now definitely keeping the pedal, when I wasn't too sure about it at first!

Let's see -- I used to be much more of a metal player, but I haven't done the metal/hardcore punk/prog metal thing since high school (unfortunately).

Does chugging a couple Mountain Dews before playing an ambient show count as extreme...?

In response to the phaser question: yeah, I think they'll work in metal sometimes, but not always. It depends if you'll get heard with it or if it'll just put you lower in the mix. I only really use modulation effects in metal when the song slowed down or got softer. That said, there's an exception to everything and tossing a fuzz before a phaser can really be the right trick. It's all an issue of taste.

Two distortions/ods: +1 to choosing carefully. If you don't choose your pedals and/or settings right, having two distortions/ods is a great way to induce head-splitting feedback and get totally lost in the mix. I suggest running a hot OD or distortion behind a less cranked one. Particularly if the second OD is tube-based and the first is something like a Tube Screamer. Perfect combo there.

Synth FX in metal: well, if you wanna sound like Smashing Pumpkins or Skinny Puppy, just make sure the rest of the band backs you up in whichever direction you go with it.

Based on all of your questions, I'm gonna suggest this pedal board for you:

Bass >> Digitech Whammy IV >> Ibanez Tube Screamer >> EHX Tube Zipper >> MXR Phase 90 >> amp.

I think it covers all of your bases plus gets you some interesting combinations. The Tube Zipper is particularly weird -- basically it's OD >> Envelope Filter >> Distortion in one box and it can get you some amazing synth tones if you push it right.

thanx all of you for your asnwers and sugestions, they are very helpfull :)
yeah I was thinking the same ...od & distor pedals at the same time on ...interesting ideea with the pashers and fuzz ...
I saw many of you use fuzz pedals ? what fuzzes you use ?
actually I-m digging on synth stufff, like it very much ...and its odd in metal music, but can sound great :)
keep on posting and presenting boards of scream :)
stay low

the bluebeard seems to be one of the fuzzes to beat. that's what mastodon uses, at least.

In my band, at least, I've found the only effect I've needed is a compressor. But then I've got two guitars playing with the gain cranked up so a cleaner sound is needed to cut through.

But then I've always preferred Alex Webster's sound to pick playing through a fuzz pedal.

and one more ... I digging to get an EH Nano Bass Balls ...actually does anyone use it ?
I curently using an EBS Valve Drive and I want a little 'contoru' kind of boost ...so I thought to EH BassBalls ... whats your oppinion ?

p.s. Alex Webster is god !!! :)
