Sirius is 8.6 light years away
Arcturus is 37
The past is the past and it's here to stay
Wikipedia's heaven
When you don't want to remember, you know
On the far side of the morning
Who was it, yea you know, we real cool
And I hope you hear me, and you'll call
Yeah, we real cool

We Real Cool, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Push the Sky Away

Which can be translated to:

it was my 12305th night
in which you appeared
you made your eyes glow
I'm sure with some fair reason
you were seeking the same thing and
for the same reason
you too were then drawn to me
you were my mirror image secretly
I drew you up and towards me
inside you - I saw myself; and inversely
Do not stir up love
before it is itself willing

Ever since the world ended
I don't go out as much
People that I once befriended
Just don't bother to stay in touch
Things that used to seem so splendid
Don't really matter today
It's just as well the world ended
It wasn't working anyway

A sip of wine, a cigarette,
And then it’s time to go.
I tidied up the kitchenette;
I tuned the old banjo.
I’m wanted at the traffic jam.
They’re saving me a seat.
I’m what I am, and what I am,
Is back on Boogie Street.

Leonard Cohen

Me all alone with jug of rum
Me stand and wait for boat to come
Is long the night, is quiet the dock
The boat she late since 12 o'clock
Me watch the tide easin' in
Is low the moon, but high the wind
Havana moon, Havana moon

There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me
.
.
.
Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion
But there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page
.
.
.
Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release

Rainbow Connection

Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbow's are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some Choose to believe it
But I know they're wrong wait and see
Someday we'll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

Come back, take me with you
I can't exist if me don't equal you now
Be here right as I am, right as you were
Answer me peace, love
To feel your head rest on my chest
So still, and close to my breath
To feel your head rest on my chest
So still forever
Sleep now in my arms forever
Sleep now in my arms together
Dream that we won't wake from ever
Sleep now in my arms

Both have special places in my heart for ones I have lost way too soon.

Pink Floyd, DSOTM

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

The Kinks. Predictable

Yeah, that's the word of the year
(Predictable)
All I see, all I hear
Why can't it be like never before?
(Predictable)
Yeah, ain't life a bore
(Predictable)
Life gets more and more...
Just like I've heard it all somewhere before.
(Predictable)
Sure as the nose on my face
(Predictable)
Same for the whole human race

Marillion-Fugazi. Fish painted word pictures that were awesome.

Son watches father scan obituary columns in search of absent school friends
While his generation digests high fibre ignorance
Cowering behind curtains and the taped up painted windows
Decriminalised genocide, provided door to door Belsens
Pandora's box of holocausts gracefully cruising satellite infested heavens
Waiting, the season of the button, the penultimate migration
Radioactive perfumes, for the fashionably, for the terminally insane, insane
Do you realise? Do you realise?
Do you realise, this world is totally fugazi

Shut It Tight
T Bone Burnett

I find it hard sometimes to say the way that I feel
I do the very things I hate to do
I act like a child and I'm afraid of what is real
And so I try to cover up the truth
I stumble like a drunk along this crazy path I walk
I have a hundred thousand questions too
I'll go to any length to prove that nothing is my fault
Then later on I will deny the proof
I don't like to win but then again I hate to lose
And in between is something I can't stand
I don't care what you think and I hope that you approve
I am just an ordinary man
Sometimes I want to stop and crawl back into the womb
And sometimes I cannot tell wrong from right
But I ain't gonna quit until I'm laid in my tomb
And even then they better shut it tight

Y'know, I generally don't like lyrics that are about a very specific narrative...my tastes lean more towards stuff that could be open to interpretation or that is so vague as to be provocative (without suggesting that all it takes is a translation for the listener to understand what it's "about").
And I also generally hate Post Your Favorite Lyric threads where folks reply by posting the entire lyric to a song...I'm way more interested in the few lines that are so strikingly fertile that they stand out from the rest of the words.

But I was just listening to an old chestnut from my college days, and I had to admit that this entire narrative is incredibly powerful.

What had you been thinking? When I came home

I find you lying on the bed in a fetal position

Up above the window was the word “exit”

Blood red scrawl blood

Red scrawl blood red

Scrawl blood red scrawl

It looked like bad news to me

I’ll bet you went down to the club this evening

I’ll bet you some schmuck kinda jerked you around

I’ll bet you went down deep

I’ll bet you came up short

Where was I?

Where was I? as if it made any difference

Where was I?

Where was I tonight? Tonight…

What had you been drinking? I wondered aloud

When I came home you looked pretty f**ked up

Radio blaring, every light on, one word above the window said “exit”

Shock red scrawl shock

Red scrawl shock red

Scrawl shock red scrawl

It looked like blood to me

I’ll bet you he called up early on

I’ll bet you didn’t go out like you had planned

I’ll bet he gave you no good reason why

I’ll bet he made you cry

Where was I?

Where was I? as if it made any difference

Where was I?

Where was I tonight? Tonight…

edit: It's funny, but reading over this post now I think my instincts to avoid lyrics that are about a very specific narrative, and to avoid posting the entire lyric to a song, are spot on. :)

Rich Mullins - Calling Out Your Name. It was amazing watching him play this on a hammered dulcimer and sing it at the same time.
Well the moon moved past Nebraska
And spilled laughter on them cold Dakota Hills
And angels danced on Jacob's stairs
Yeah, they danced on Jacob's stairs
There is this silence in the Badlands
And over Kansas the whole universe was stilled
By the whisper of a prayer
The whisper of a prayer
And a single hawk bursts into flight
And in the east the whole horizon is in flames
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name
I can feel the earth tremble
Beneath the rumbling of the buffalo hooves
And the fury in the pheasant's wings
And there's fury in a pheasant's wings
And it tells me the Lord is in His temple
And there is still a faith that can make the mountains move
And a love that can make the heavens ring
And I've seen love make heaven ring
I hadn't heard of this song before now. I just YouTubed it. Beautiful song.

Ben Folds Five -One Angry Dwarf (200 Solemn Faces)

September '75 I was 47 inches high
Mom said someday I would have
A bad ass mother G.I. Joe
For your little minds to blow
I still got beat up after class
Now I'm big and important
One angry dwarf
And 200 solemn faces
Are you
If you want to see me
Check your papers and your T.V.
Look who's tellin' who what to do
Kiss my ass good-bye

Don't give me that ********
You know who I am
I'm your nightmare little man
Vic you stole my lunch money.
Made me cry.
Jane remember second grade
Said you couldn't stand my face
Rather than kiss me you said
You'd rather die
Now I'm big and important
One angry dwarf
And 200 solemn faces
Are you
If you want to see me
Check your papers and your T.V.
Look who's tellin' who what to do
Kiss my ass good-bye
You'll be sorry one day
Yes you will, yes you will
You shouldn't push me around
Cause I will, yes I will
You will be sorry when I'm big
Yes you will be sorry
