Finally got my new one! Three hours down, six or so more to go. The sky is gonna take up a lot of my shoulder and there will be more landscape surrounding the dragon. The wings and fire still gotta be colored, as does the face which I'm really suped about.

Hey all - Some lovely art here, I'm enjoying going through the thread.

Finally got my first tattoo. Really pleased with it.

I wanted a subtle ref to my love of music and especially bass. The original design had a saphire centre so that was replaced with the clef.

Sorry the photo is a bit dodgy. Photo about 4 hours after being done.

Thanks James - it's healed beautifully. It's addictive stuff. I got plans for 2 more once I get back from skiing in France next month :hyper:

You get any work done - can't seem to see any pics, maybe I missed them. Know you were talking about it earlier in the thread.

great tat! But I've got a question for you guys with "sleeve" tattoos, how did you get that design, was it in a book or did you have it personally drawn? And also, how much of it did you envision yourself, and how much did someone else create? The reason I ask is because I'm interested and have some ideas, but don't really know the next step.

For me personally... I had an idea and found just the right person to do it through references. Obviously a full sleeve is not something to go into without much thought. I have one other tat, and enjoyed the experience.

So, I have always been interested in asian cultures, I am a pisces and I also study Bonsai... I left the rest to the artist. He is very good. He has studied IREZUMI (traditional Japanese tattooing) and actually prefers that style and would be happy doing said style almost exclusively. A lot of artists don't like to be told what to do so I was lucky in finding somebody with great skill that could take my list of about 20 words and run with it.

Here'e the cool thing... the first 2 sessions were discussed beforehand... a few koi. We talked about the grand idea of koi ascending up out of the waters into a dragonfish on my shoulder and maybe over into some of the chest. I was cool with that idea. Well I show up at the 3rd session and he had dropped the dragonfish and added a tree... I was blown away because this is really what I always wanted. Through our first 2 sessions we got to know each other pretty good, he is my age and went to a rival HS, and during our conversations he was astute enough to actually LISTEN to what I was saying. Imagine that. So I am more than pleased!

Here are a few suggestions if you decide to do something like this:
1. What do you do for a living? Will the tattoo have any adverse affects on your livelyhood? What about your family?
2. What can you afford? Do you have to save up a bit before jumping in?
3. Have you did research on what you want done? Do it mean anything to you, or could it possibly be regretted 10 years down the line?
4. Have you asked for references for an artist? Make sure to do your homework... you are gonna' pay good money for this, and it's on you till death so make absolutely sure YOU get what YOU wanted.

Mine is not a full sleeve (technically it's a 1/4 sleeve, because it doesn't wrap around to the back of my arm), but here's how mine came about:

The angel is a depiction of an angel from Revelation 20, who binds Satan and throws him into the Abyss (hell) after the battle of Armageddon. This has a lot of meaning for me, because I have experienced angels vs. demons spiritual warfare first hand, and also because I can't wait for the day that Satan gets what's coming to him. After I decided on that for the basic idea, I researched a few tattoo artists in the area, and I came up with Adam from 5 Point (Invalid Link Removed, who also happened to do my girlfriend's chestpiece. I like his style and the way he puts together the art. I described to him what I wanted, and a couple of weeks later I had a drawing. To be honest, it didn't look anything like how I had imagined it, but I still loved it, so I went with it. A good artist will be able to take the image that you are describing and mke it into ART, not just a picture tattooed on your arm.

He doesn't smoke, and that was just a guess on my part. He does amazing work with shading, and I'm certainly willing to pay a little more for a quality piece of work. Also, there will be a lot of color and shading outside the lines to frame the piece. I know that my girlfriend is almost finished with a chestpiece from the same guy that's about the same size and it will be about 10 hours all told.
