The 4001's have a thinner neck, I suggest that instead of a 4003.
according to several folks at rickresource,the newest 4003's are sporting very thin 70's neck profiles,along with full-width neck inlays,and the rick bypass circuit to make your 4003 sound like a 70's 4001.....i am gonna have to go on down to my local GC and see if they have one in stock....

All 2006 and newer models have this new feature.
I suggested the 4001 because you can get the best features of thin neck and tone for $1200-$1500, whereas to get the 4003's with thin neck and push/pull tone knob, it being new, you'll pay over $2000 and wait a few years.

I'd actually like to score a '70s 4001. That sound is what made me love bass (Rush, Yes).
Sometimes you can get lucky with the big chain stores. Musician's Friend had blue 4003s in stock recently.

btw, is it affect the weight?
The wood pickguard? I'm sure it weighs a couple ounces more than a plastic pickguard. The wood pickguard was already on there when I bought it used from a local guitar shop about 12 years ago. The carved thumbrest at the neck pickup is a huge improvement. I mostly play over the bridge pickup but I would never trade the wood pickguard. Also gives my Ric a unique look.
This is the only memory left of my Ric 4001 jetglo 1978... My heart is still broken. Pic was taken in February 1979.

I just modified my old 1993 4004L again ... I got the pickups and the string spacing better. Now I have a 5 string ric with a nice wide spacing at the bridge, pickups that cover all 5 strings, and a 4 band preamp. And it still has the Ric sound!

How do those 4004s play/sound compared to the 4001/4003s? I've always been kind of interested in them but have never played or heard one.
I like the 4004 but not completely sold on it compared to the 4003s. It is easy to play but the neck is fatter from top to bottom on the 4004. Not having the binding and horseshoe PU cover to work around is nice. The sound is more modern but not as defined as the 4003. The Ric sound is there but not as much high end. The 4004 seems to have more crunchiness inherent to it's sound. I use an RBI preamp and I had to dial back the drive on it when using the 4004 becuase the sound was getting too muddy. I like how the 4004 sounds but I LOVE how the 4003 sounds. We just did a bit of recording and I used a 4003 and a 4004. The recorded sound of the 4003 is tighter and punchier - more what I am after.
The 4004 seems like a lower end Ric with not having the binding, horseshoe cover and 2 less controls although I think they cost the same or close to the same new. I am a bit on the fence as to whether I will keep it or look for another 4003.

that is a really nice blending of the 4003/4004 looks there-very nice indeed. did you have to route out the body much for the bridge pickup? preamp fit into existing control cavity?
