Post your VERY SPECIFIC pedalboard, if you got it ...

You know, one rule about experienced pedal board people seems to be not to tie down everything too tight.
You plan your board, you execute the build, it's all coming together, you have it set up and then your favorite pedal company releases Pedal X, and you absolutely have to get that one - but it has side jacks and the one you're currently using has top jacks, so you shift things around a bit to make it happen, and it works, but now, your planned board is not your planned board any more. It's a small change, and basically, you only had to stretch the cables a bit and cut one zip tie to take the power cable out and route it slightly different, but the super sleek and intended look is gone. In the following weeks or months, you do realize that you're missing that one pedal you've taken off more than you thought, and want it back, and to make that happen, you will have to shift from that wide pedal to a smaller one. . .

Sound familiar? I've been through this more than once.


Are there people who settled on a fixed order of fixed pedals, then arranged that super neatly on a pedalboard and used it for more than 6 months without a single change?
If so, I'd like to see a pic of that board.

I am traveling for work right now so no pics available, but my pedalboard is very specific. It's based on a Temple Audio Duo 17, which is big enough to fit what I need but small enough to be portable. Underneath I tuck a Cioks DC7 and a Sennheiser EW-D full-size half rackspace wireless receiver. The antennas for the receiver are located on the side of the board in the standard D-punch panels built into the pedalboard's configurable side panels. Audio flows from there to a TC Electronic Polytune 3 Mini, to a Source Audio C4 synth at the top of the board, located horizontally. Then it flows to a Line 6 HX Stomp XL. The balanced out is routed underneath the board to another D-punch panel. There's a Hotone Ampero Control that controls the C4 Synth. I also have a Source Audio One midi adapter mounted to give me Midi Thru. Then, I use two dual button footswitches attached to the Ampero Control to output Midi on another channel that triggers DMX via a DoReMidi box on the pedalboard, which fires the band's geyser foggers. The DMX routes again under the pedalboard to a DMX-wired XLR output on a D-punch panel in the side. Finally power comes into the whole rig by yet another D-punch panel with a Powercon input. Arrangement is super specific and wired down with wire ties, etc. But gig setup is a breeze. Plop the pedalboard down, connect power, audio out, DMX out, and it's ready to roll.

Not "super neatly" but meets the "over 6 months" criteria. 😄

The C9 occupies a spot where I can swap in things I'd like to try. Otherwise that spot is empty.

MAIN PATH:
Tuner> LS2E> Wah> C4> LS2W> Comp> Y box> Amp.

ALTERNATE PATHS:
LS2E blends the Distortion
LS2W blends the C9 or whatever will be there.

MISC:
DMC Micro PRO switches the C4 presets.

The powered Y splitter takes the signal from the Comp and sends one side to the Rolls (for my personal IEM mix), and one side to the amp.
 
I've had a number of guitar boards like that, where everything is planned to the millimeter, and a new pedal would trigger a complete rebuild. Here's a sampling of some of my crazy tetris boards, in chronological order (so you can witness my descent into madness).

I've since managed to break free of the obsession, thankfully. These days I'm fully running modeling in some form or another, so my boards now are not necessary to tetris so hard.

I use black twisty ties for the power supply cables underneath just so they’re easier to change. And I use dual lock instead of Velcro. My board has changed about once every couple of years since I first designed and built it 15 years ago. Every time I alter it, it looks like it was designed perfectly.

I don’t have an updated pic since I added the MXR bass synth back in August. But here’s how it looked last June, probably in its 5 or 6th iteration of swapping out a pedal one at a time. Since this pic the sans amp is gone (it was just a back up DI to my Noble anyways) and I’ve added the MXR bass synth, plus a small tap pedal to change its presets, and the Dunlop mini volume pedal. The Fairfield barbershop got moved to my mini pedal board that carries my Noble on top of my amp.

All but the Feber have been in the same order for about a decade (well, the Jule wasn’t always on the board.. used to have the dovecage version that lived elsewhere). And since I consider them all more utility/always on pedals they don’t move around. But the Feber’s slot and the empty real estate are my “floater” areas. System works well pretty well for me - strikes a good balance of some flexibility, but disincentivizes me from doing any big overhauls - those projects just feel like they have diminishing returns nowadays, just feels hard to improve on this setup for what I’m after.

I do have a powered pedal train Nano+ on hand though from prior iterations. I may toy with a “breakout board” on that some day so I don’t have to disturb this which works great for me in its current form. Like the open slots here, it would be easy to route that all in at any given part of the signal chain.

Very specific use-case:

Bass --> HPF @ 25Hz --> Tuner --> Compressor --> Splitter...

A --> Preamp --> Interface Chan 1 --> Ableton Live Channel...
B --> 1 Octave Down 100% Wet --> LPF --> Interface Chan 2 --> Ableton Live Channel...

In Ableton:
- Bass Chan (A) with plugins & automation...
- "Sub" Chan (B) with plugins & automations...
- Then combined again to another chan with plugins & automations. (Slightly more complicated than that. There's another layer of bussing, but it's the gist.)

(There's a Cioks DC7 hidden underneath.)

When i'm not working on that specific project, if i'm just playing music at home or whatever, it's essentially going from the compressor to my amp input. (you can see the pink Tsunami cable isn't going into the Preamp right now)

When i'm subbing gigs for other people i either don't take my pedal board, or i just go Tuner --> Compressor. (Once i added octaver to the end of that for one gig)
 
My board has changed plenty, but I've definitely had some six-month-plus runs here and there. Pretty sure the below configuration lasted way longer than that once I finally had it together. I did ultimately have to break it up only because I moved to having a preamp/DI mounted on my board rather than in a rack, but my current board still has the most important pieces from this. In terms of specificity, it certainly took a fair amount of planning to get four pedals that worked well in the Fifth Element stones enclosures and to settle on an arrangement that worked well for live use and cable management, considering many of the pedals are in a true bypass loop.
