Stanley Clarke has a Bigsby on his 'I Wanna Play For You' album. I called Bigby back then and they think it was a guitar trem as they stated they don't make bass trems. The one pictured here is the same as Stanley's so it must also be a guitar whammy.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as a Bass Bigsby, nor is there a bass tremolo that doesn't require routing. As far as I'm aware, the one that requires LEAST modification is the Kahler.

what i do with my left hand is vibrato. This is not replicable by any of teh modern whammy bars, the older ones that had limited range were good at it though. Vibrato as mentioned above is a volume modulation. I like whammy bar best. It describes what it does and implies cheesiness

Retrofitting a bigsby for bass isn't really that hard- just pull the string mounting pins and relocate them with bass spacing, or disassemble the unit and fabricate/install a new bar. (I'm at the point where I just sort of assume a Bigsby will require modification of some kind to work properly. ever install a B-16? sheesh.) Finding strings that will work, now that's hard. I strung it up with "taper core" strings, where the winding starts an inch or so away from the ball end. No idea what the customer is using now.

I've just aquired this all original 1962 Burns Split Sound 6 String Bass with wammy bar.
I used one myself from 1963 to 1968, for the doubters yes it really is a bass I used it with my band this week.

i haven't seen a whammy on a 5 string bass... is it because it doesn't work well on 5 strings?

I've seen them on 5,6,7 & 8(doubled 4)string Basses before and they seem to work just as fine as they do on a 4 string.Hipshot makes a 5 & 6 string Bass tremolo.
