Power section blown? HELP!

Ok. So I bought a head sight unseen for cheap. they said it was in perfect working condition.
I get it unwrapped, plug it in, and awww crap!
It sounds like I have a fuzz pedal hooked up to it at any volume or eq setting...
i play through the headphone jack, and its absolutely perfect!
I hook it up as a preamp to my other head, and it works perfect.
i use it with its properly rated cab, and distortion!
Is there any way i could fix this? or should I send it back...P.S
i am in Canada, and had it shipped up here from Texas.
i'm not sure its worth shipping back for what I spent on it..
cheap fix? or preamp it is?

Did you try a patch cable in the effects loop ?


Since you are getting sound, it does not sound like the whole power section is blown.

Something could have come loose during shipping, and may be an easy fix.

Try the FX loop patch first.

What do you mean? use the efects loop as a speaker out?

For others reading............

The effects loop is after the pre-amp, but before the power section.

When the contacts get dirty, it can sometimes cause the problem you are describing.

Just use an instrument cable, and plug it into the send and return.

What amp head is it, tube, solid state? What brand? It is possible if the loop test doesn't clear it up a questionable solder joint have loosened in shipping on the poweramp board and is causing your troubles.

Murphy's law says that it's the power transistors on a SS head or an output transformer on a tube head.

Don't feel bad; just happend to me on a Trace head and the parts are $100 and so is the labor

I had a look inside, and its a little thing that looks like a miniature propane tank with a wire coming out of the top of it, and conecting to the board as well...it appears to be burnt! It had shrink wrap on it, but one side of it was burnt thru!
This is NOT shipping damage! dang ebay! this guy must have known it was Mucked before selling it to me!

anyhow..I think its a blown or burnt resistor.
