Power supplies: Let's have it out!

A Voodoo Labs Power supply is around $170 bucks. I can get two 1Spot kits and a surge protector for less than $70. I'm saving roughly $100 bucks by going this route and I can power everything I use. Heck, if you're worried about space then don't put the surge protector on your board. Problem solved.

Yeah, when the problem does not include any grounding incompatibilities between individual pedals. Among the literally hundreds of pedals I've owned, at least a third of the time there was some ground interaction that was solved by isolating the supplies. This has nothing whatsoever to do with surge suppressors.

Nobody is saying that the 1spot isn't functional for the pedals you use, but there are many pedals and combinations of them that cannot be ideally powered with a 1spot. There are what are called "charge pumps" to run 12,18, and 24 volt pedals with a 1Spot, but they tend to be pretty pricey (this one is nearly $30, some can be found for a bit cheaper, but if you have a handful of pedals that need different voltages the cost will add up quickly): Invalid Link Removed And each one of those charge pumps you use also reduces the amperage your supply will put out (I can't speak to how well they work either, though I know there are many production pedals that use similar pumps in their internal circuitry for more headroom from a 9 volt supply). You also need seperate adaptors to run/isolate pedals with center-positive power requirements if you have those- again more money and more things to go wrong. And these solutions still don't solve the noise/grounding issues that can be had when daisy chaining certain pedals nor can a 1Spot ever power any AC powered units.

Again- good on you if a couple of 1 Spots work ideally for your situation, but they just aren't the ideal choice for everyone. I like to be able to just have my one isolated supply without a crazy chain of funky/clunky adaptors and extra wall warts powering my pedals. It sounds good (no extraneous noise as I did have running most of the same pedals with a 1 Spot for many years) and its convenient. Think of it as having a bunch of wall warts (of all the different forms you could probably need) compacted into one relatively small and robust case. No smoke and mirrors!

Anyway, I have a 1-Spot. I liked it, but it's a rat's nest, and it doesn't accommodate Moog pedals. As a result, I had to go with a Voodoo Lab.

Not exactly true. If you get a ground isolator from Godlyke as well as the reverse polarity plug that the Moog's require. But the point is, with a few add ons you can use a 1 spot to power up all sorts of pedals.

I run two Moogs off mine as well as 3 other pedals, and it's whisper quiet and I didn't have to give up space for more pedals.

's a weird thing though. y ou can tell they put a lot of thought into the aesthetics of the design, but who's not going to mount it underneath their board? all you can actually see of it is some pink through the slats.

great power supply though.

lol.

does this count as Burly Tattoo'd Metal Dood?

's from a series of a photoshoot that we're releasing slowly. my singer/keys (that i ADORE) on the left, me on the right.

i'm so.... so very PRETTY.

thats yer singer? I'll have to come see you guys. wow.

Yeah, I use a Cioks AC-10 on my covers board because is really is the only supply I've found that can power everything on that board. The Whammy needs AC, the Octavius Squeezer needs like 300 mA of 9VDC, the DD-20 needs like 200, and my wah needs isolated as well.

My originals board is ever more of a nightmare, because I have so many weird powered pedals. Space Station needs AC, EHX BMS needs 24V, Flanger Hoax needs 18V, and I'm gonna be swapping the Squeezer back and forth between both boards. Using power strips and wall warts for that one right now, but will probably end up having to get the Ciokolate when it comes out.

Until recently, I was using a Pedal Pad Power Pad II with a pedal board of the same brand. It worked excellently for my needs, though I should say that I was using pretty standard voltage pedals.

I came upon a smoking deal and upgraded to a Pedaltrain Pro II with 2 Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2's. Those things are so excellent. Not to mention allowing me to add more pedals in the mix. ;-)
