Practice headphone/amp/gadget

Try to find a used or NOS Raven Labs PHA-1, these are great sounding and quite versatile; I have used mine as a recording preamp and even a gigging preamp, too, in addition to it's great capability for practicing to music using it's 1/4" stereo input with my iMac.

A search on "headphone" will reveal more info, but some top options include the Cafe Walter, the Phil Jones Bass Buddy, the Yamaha Magicstomp, and several of the Zoom and Line 6 modeling pedals.
Not any more. Yamaha discontiued these a few years ago. You can find a used one. I personally highly recommend the Cafe Walter if you can afford one. It is an excellent practice amp.
I emailed BassNW some time ago for a price. I've since lost that email. It's around $250 IIRC?

The Magicstomps show up for sale used quite frequently for around $100. They did make a bass version, but the "regular" version also works with bass, and all of the bass programs can be downloaded for free and loaded onto the MS via USB cable.

The MagicStomp, in addition, is capable of simply awesome delay, echo and reverb, and pretty good compression (and a bunch of other mediocre stuff). Only problem is that it can't run on batteries (if you need that).
Of course there's the Tascam bass Trainer that can also play and loop MP3 files to practice with (I use mine daily), and the Jacques Fat Burner compressor stomp has a headphone output.

I also emailed BassNW about the Cafe Walter. Here's the reply I got from them about the price: "Cafe Walter HA-1A headphone amp - $169.00 + $50.00 U.S. Postal Service shipping and handling".
The shipping being to Europe of course. Not too bad!

I personally love my Korg Pandora. It's got a variety of cabs, amps, models and effects, has a bunch of different practice tools (beats, metro, phrase trainer) a tuner and a 'through' for an audio source.

Another one for the Cafe Walter amp. It's the best representation of a bass' natural signal there is. What you hear is what you are actually playing. It's great for jamming on new tunes or even recording through.
Just pick up a cheap micro mixer from any manufacturer. Bass into one channel, Ipod or whatever into another and headphones into the headphone socket. $40-50 is all you need.

+1 The Pandora is the swiss army knife of practice boxes with the rhythm section to play along with (many different drum patterns), decent sounding effects and Aux in for your CD/MP3 player to plug into. Slightly bigger than a pack of cigarettes.
I have a Cafe Walter and an older guitar version of the Pandora. The Cafe Walter gives you an accurate rendition of your bass. Very clean. Great product.
The Pandora is satisfactory but adds so much stuff that's just plain fun and makes you want to play. The guitar Pandora has simple little bass lines in the rhythm trainer section, but I don't know what the bass version has. If possible, I recommend you try one in a store. I really love mine.
Either way, both Cafe Walter and Pandora are great for what they are, just different from each other. Enjoy!
