Practicing at odd times....

Its always early in the morning for me, for the peace and quiet in the house, and my brains still being fresh - the alternative is late in the evening, being tired. It is almost like meditation, more about connecting with the instrument than 'i have to have this song done by tomorrow night"

Practicing that early also allows for playing completely unplugged - and i can still hear myself play. It's a special joy.

"Odd times" means time of day - I just meant that it feels odd to me sometimes to be in here plucking away (headphones) at 6 am, but it's my only real private time and no 'stink-eye'.

Is your partner a musician? If they are not musicians, sometimes they get a little touchy, that you have another love...

Am I the only one that will practice at odd times (like 6 am) to avoid the 'stink-eye' from the partner?

You know the look - "you're really doing THAT now instead of __________ (folding clothes/taking out the trash/cutting the grass/unloading the diswasher........)

Like the practice session is not the MOST important thing each day. Come on!
Whatever it takes brother.

Exactly. Well, within reason. A friend was too 'in the zone' to answer his phone when his girlfriends car broke down. So she called me. I fixed her car, tailed her home (to make sure it didnt break down again) and he was still playing when we got there. ...Guitar players...

It has a bit more gravity to it than loading the dishwasher. The lazy scoundrel.

Big house, no problem. I do my quiet time stuff like listen to our recordings, watch videos or putz around on other stuff for the 2-3 hours I'm up first, but then as long as my wife isn't sleeping, pretty much anything goes. I've actually gone over the same song a dozen times, singing and playing at a moderately loud amp setting, and she walked back to the 'west wing' and ask if I've been working on anything.

Likewise, I can take a retired-guy nap most any time I want, and nothing she does elsewhere ever wakes me up. But then again I can usually fall asleep in less than two minutes, and I've napped in my nephew's large basement family room recliner with 17 1-y.o.s to pre-teens running around yelling and screaming on several occasions, so... Yet a phone alarm clock playing an .mp3 at 1/4 volume wakes me up in seconds.

Yep, late at night for me. After everyone else is in bed.

One of the reasons my bass sits idle, the second I am plugged in I get a "where are you?" Which essentially means drop what you are doing as come watch tv with me. If she goes first the tv goes next.

Last thing I do nearly every day is practice...with headphones. If I wanted to, I could get up early and practice...with headphones. But I don't want to. But if I did, I could. On the weekends, I practice whenever I want...with headphones. Do you see a pattern here? :D My family has healthy boundaries and I love them too much to break / bend the agreed upon boundaries in order to selfishly meet my needs. Now of course this all goes out the window when I bring home a new amp, cabinet, etc. :woot::hyper::bassist:.
