Stunning stuff folks. Question for the experts. Currently looking at a '61 P. Lake Placid Blue. "Said" to be original. Concerns are a red undercoat in the worn areas including neck pocket and a tort pick guard. I've heard that the metallic colors had under coats such as this. Seller thinks it was a repaint before it left the factory. But all the LPB P's I've ever seen had white guards. All pots and internals match as correct. Plays and sounds phenomenal. Any help out there would be appreciated.
Sometimes they shot colors over other colors in the factory, so it's possible. If the little nail holes (not inside, but right by the neck pocket and the control cavity) have paint in them, then it's for sure been refinned. If not, it doesn't necessarily mean it is the original finish, but it could be.
It's also possible for the tort to be original. LPB was a special custom order in 1961, so it's not crazy to think they could have requested a tort guard at the same time. Let's see some pics!

For me it looks like a refin for sure ! Compare the patterns of the neck end lower side and the neck pocket - they do not match. In the last pic you can easily see the "orange skin" of the finish in the light. They never did the Nitro finish that way...
Photos certainly don't always tell the truth, but for comparison sake, here are a couple of close-ups of the paint on my LPB 65 Jazz. It has a slight metallic quality even after 50 years.
Checking in with my '64 P. Legend has it that this bass was refinished in the 70's to its current colour, which I have nicknamed "baby-poo brown". While it may not look as pretty as some of the examples in this thread, it still works 3 sets a night (without a backup!!) playing everything from The Clash to Ray Charles. Just a phenomenal sounding and playing instrument.
