Historically accurate or not, the Firemist Gold is beautiful on that bass!
I think FG is nicer with a mint or white P/G, but the tort looks good under stage lights.
I love this bass, the neck is rock solid and perfect in my hand, and at around 8 1/2lbs it's a comfortable and highly resonant monster of a bass. I've got Dean Markley flats on it and it sings, growls, thumps, whatever you want. I love P basses from all eras but some of these vintage ones really are special.

Here's my very clean 1968 tele with lollipops. It's a June '68 neck date best I can remember. Best sounding bass I've ever played. Neck joint so tight I have to lightly tap it to get it out after the screws are removed, great fret work. It wears Chromes and gets played through a Blackfoot Custom Amp (all tube). Some say these were built out of leftover '54 precision parts CBS found laying around, who knows?

Here's the latest addition to my bass family...
The finish was done in '74 and the pick guard was painted at the same time.
I took her apart to see what was original and not as well as clean her all up...
It looks like the pick guard was original after all once I got the paint off of it. Aside from the PG screws, a strap nut, and the body finish, it appears to be all original. The "C" neck feels great to me and the smoothness of the sound is really sweet.
The $17 nickel rounds didn't last long on it. Very thin sounding with lots of trebel. The tape wound flats that the original owner had on it were very dirty and warn but they really capture that motown sound without using foam at the bridge. i.e. low sustain. The newer tape wounds I put on her sound very different with much more treble and what seems like great sustain not unlike my FBass BN5. I'm waiting for a set of LaBella deep talkin flats to come in the mail that will get their turn on this baby.

This was saved in my watch list and The reason I am posting it is because the seller is claiming that it is finest example of a first year Jazz bass that exists, so if you didn't get a chance to see it here it is.Its not mine so if that offends anyone I will take it down and put my tail between my legs. I just thought as long as we are drooling over these things.......

That Jazz is absolutely amazing, and it's scary clean, meaning it's almost too clean, too nice.
It definitely appears to be legit though. From what I can see it looks completely original.
The asking price is kinda insane, but I guess that's why it STILL hasn't sold, and probably never will as long as the owner keeps asking that kinda cash.
I've seen custom color J basses priced well below that & just as nice condition, just sit on EBay and I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure they never actually sold, at least not on EBay anyway.

Took the bass apart last year for sale (not now)... apparently body is not original... bummer!
lost most of the original parts over the years.
May do a complete restore when funds allow.

I was thinking of selling and had to supply shots of the bass sans neck ect...
Sent photos off to Rich at RichardHenry Guitars ( they deal in vintage stuff)...
He got back saying there was some doubt as the the originality of the body....
I did'n't ask him to be more specific... I didn't really want to let it go anyway!

By no means am I saying he's wrong or right, just that since I've been into this stuff I've seen more than a few really flat out incorrect assumptions, only to be cleared up later on.
I'm really curious because you're shim is EXACTLY like mine from the factory.
I don't really know if you care or not (I certainly would) but let the TB guys take a swing at it.
Post some good pics of specific areas and see if everyone agrees.
Extra holes IMO could have been made by anyone for any number of reasons, people buy into all kinds of off the wall assumptions, and supposed quick fixes.
If you're willing to post em, post a straight on shot of the back looking into the area of the lower horn cut away (where the cut away meets the neck pocket) looking for the router hump.
Inside the control cavity.
How is the bridge grounded?
Under the pick guard.
Does it have all the correct holes for a period correct pick guard, nail holes for painting, etc.
Nail holes would usually be just above the E string under the guard next to the second to last screw for the pick guard.
One under the bridge.
And one near the back control plate screw hole.
With a possibility of a fourth somewhere.
Any writing in the P'up cavities at all? Look close?

The pic of the back is too far over towards the upper horn to see, you'd need to go left and show the lower horn. So when looking at the back of the bass you want a shot of the very edge of the cut away / neck pocket area (side where the serial number begins) actually just over the edge from the serial number.
There should be a little raised section there, a very subtle hump, instead of just a smooth transition.
Here, hopefully these pics show you what I mean, look just off the lower left neck plate screw where the body humps out.
But before I get you all worked up I'd like to see others chime in with opinions too. Unless you don't mind posting the pics. Then by all means, post away.

Never noticed before, in all the years I've have it... 30 plus I reckon!
Don't really feel like taking bits off to check the screw holes at the mo.
I recall the paint being quite thick, I suspect it's a crappy refin, one of the ashtray holes was painted in.
I remember using the 'f' cover as an... ashtray! I think I threw them out.
