Pre CBS Fender Photo Thread

I know I probably posted earlier in the thread, but I have a couple of minutes to re-post.

This is a 1963 P; originally it was Oly White, but when I got it in 1967 the finish was all chipped up and I don't like that, so I had it re-painted a Ford Gold metallic around 1972. The neck decal shows that the neck is around 1972; the truss rod broke in the original neck and I had to replace the neck quickly for a gig I was playing. Of course, in 1972 the P was just an old bass and no one thought twice about keeping the old neck.

Oh, and the flatwound strings on it are the ones I used when the neck was replaced - they're around 40 years old now.

That Jazz is absolutely amazing, and it's scary clean, meaning it's almost too clean, too nice.

It definitely appears to be legit though. From what I can see it looks completely original.

The asking price is kinda insane, but I guess that's why it STILL hasn't sold, and probably never will as long as the owner keeps asking that kinda cash.

I've seen custom color J basses priced well below that & just as nice condition, just sit on EBay and I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure they never actually sold, at least not on EBay anyway.

I watched it for a while and it did in fact sell for 37 k.
I mean if you are a wealthy bass player and don't have one,
that would be a nice addition.The guy on the tonight show plays one,maybe he is the new owner.

Yep, you posted before and I know because I remember the drool spot I had to clean up after looking. :-)

Very nice, and I like that it's a unusual color too.

Guess I spoke too soon, very well, from now on I shall seek before I speak.

I guess this confirms that things really are as valuable as someone is willing to spend.

Makes me want to list my Squier's for $20,000.00
Who knows, if people will buy ghosts in bottles, they'll buy anything.

I wonder if they ever let those ghosts out, anyway??

Oh and wasn't there a piece of toast with Jesus on it too that sold for some crazy amount???

I recall the paint being quite thick, I suspect it's a crappy refin, one of the ashtray holes was painted in.

Okay, well the hump is a start, there are more modern basses that have it too so it'll take more than just the hump, but it's a start in the right direction at least.

Now, add that to the time you've owned it, the shim being exactly like mine, which is a verified 62 jazz.
Again, I'm no expert, but something tells me that body is original.

Definitely let us know when you're ready to pull those covers. Unfortunately though with the other holes being filled I'm scared the nail holes could easily have been filled. But it's definitely worth looking further into.

The grounding strip could easily have been switched out, how is the bridge currently grounded? Just a wire straight from the pots?

Wait! The pic you already have with the guard off shows a hole by the neck in the correct location, but I can't tell if maybe its from where a secondary thumb rest may have been or is it a nail hole.

Yes... it has the ground wire to the bridge. The holes at the top are for a secondary thumb rest.

Glad I kept the strap button on the back of the headstock... swapped out the old machines for some '70s, what a fool I was. Didn't like them turning the 'wrong' way and they were rusted to unusable. Oh well.
