'62 P-Bass with a '69 Jazz neck... refinished (Honey to Dark Wine Red burst)after it was in a Bar fire....... it was played 5/6 nights a week from 70 'till 1976 when I traded/bought a new Music man String Ray

Aww don't give up so easy, all the dangers are part of the fun.
Just educate the crap out of yourself and make 100% sure you know exactly what to look for on the models your interested in.

Would it be more "safe" to buy from people such as Fretted Americana or Norm's Rare Guitars? I'm just saying hypothetically as I also understand they're not the cheapest, so perhaps having peace of mind is worth a premium?

I believe that Gary Wineroth, owner of Guitar Showcase in Campbell Ca. still owns it... He had it on display for awhile in '80 to '85 (he has an amazing collection of vintage guitars and Basses)... the last I saw it was about 1987 in the display case, I haven't been back to the Bay Area for several years now, but I'm guessing he still has it. Oh Yeah.. you can't see it but it has a Duro Body Guard on it.. to protect the back from all those big 'ol CW belt buckles

one of the reasons that I let it go was, the neck developed a twist that was UN-adjustable or fixable so I decided to go with the New (at the time, 1976) MM String Ray

Is it normal for a '59 not to have that extra strap button on the back of the headstock? Having no date on the neck, if there a date in the neck pocket of beneath the pickups?

I have a few parts of a mids 60s fender P, neckplate dated '65, pots dated 65, a tort gaurd and shield no cracks , and a 65 body, no routes but refin'd fiesta. If you think your bass may needs some parts let me know.

Yes, the strap button came in to being on the '61s I think...
No Date on neck: yes, for the first half of '59
Neck Pocket date? - NO, Under Pickups... Yes, mine was in the pickup cavity, but had been sprayed over... and as delicately as we tried it was unreadable.

It is a great bass and, for sure, the best neck ever! IMHO (of course)

I get a kick out of the stereotypical cigarette burn mark... mine has one

Was that maple neck really dated Pre CBS? What are the markers made of as they don't look like clay?

Look like normal marks, not clay.
