Pre Gain?

Okay, this is probably a newbie question, but whatever. I'm using a peavey TNT 115, from the early to mid 90's (as far as I know) And it has Pre gain, high/low knobs, a 7 band graphic eq, volume, bright and punch switches, and built in chorus. Recently, I've been turning the pre gain up to 10, with the volume at a low volume (1 in my basement, 2 or3 jamming with my friend) It gives me a really cool, natural sort of overdrive that's way better sounding than distortion from my Boss DS-1; very good for punk, and DFA 1979 stuff. No problems thus far, but I don't want to blow out my only "real" amp. So, I wanted to check with those of you more knowledgeable than I about amps to make sure this is safe. Thanks for all the help!
