Pre-Gig Buzz

A double shot of the best Vodka (straight, not chilled) the bar has as soon as I get through the door, then set everything up and wait. Just before the first two sets, one more single shot of Vodka. Then nothing the rest of the night. Usually completely sober by the end of the night.

I don't drink at all if I'm not doing a gig, so thats my absolute(!) max..

Grey Goose, Skyy, Absolute; in order of preference..

Dude, I have a personal record of 14 shots of cheap 100 proof vodka with 3 beers for chasers in 25 minutes during a shot competition against a guy who outweighed me by 50 pounds. I weigh 135 pounds for reference, so even though I am a lightweight, I ain't no lightweight. I have acheived BACs that according to expert literature should have resulted in coma or death and remember being pissed on by a ferret at the peak of my evening. I am a Marine, and I fear no (amount of) beer.

None of that means a hill of beans when I am attempting to play a bass. In those instances I even found the ferret thing to be entertaining, so I don't think it would have contributed meaningfully to my enjoyment of playing music. I think that a number of people who have posted a distaste for the need to play inebriated are not in fact opposed to being inebriated. But I play music because of the natural high, and having grown out of getting completely wrecked every time I have a drink, I can see these people's point.

To each his own.........
I think that if you are a responsible adult you know your limit. Me it just depends on how I feel that day, sometimes a beer or a alcohol drink in general helps me relax. Which will help with taking the edge off being nervous. I learned long ago what it would take to get me trashed or give me a hangover the next day, so I don't go there. Example: Getting trashed while playing a house party and accidentaly sticking the headstock of your bass in a ceiling fan. I say do what feels right to you, and don't beat on another guy for what feels right to him.

all I did was put a ding in the tip of the headstock, but this was after explaining how much it had cost me to the "band", whose gear all combined cost what that bass did. I thought the guitar player was gonna vomit, but I shrugged it off. I was pissed when I sobered up though. Yet another reason to watch the alcohol intake at shows. That and getting forgetful about security and having gear stolen.

What a bunch of lightweights in this here thread! :P

I had no idea there was an element of contest in this thread. I don't drink or smoke when playing a gig but concede that many others here do, to varying degrees. It doesn't seem too unreasonable to infer that people will not agree as to what 'degrees' are acceptable. Imagine that, a difference of opinion! I see no need to pass judgement on those whose habits differ from your own, and, if I may say, given your love of 420, I expected you to be a wee bit more chill about the whole thing.
Carry on.

I'm completely chill. You're the one who took one sentence of mine and read all kinds of elaborate things into it.

Here...take a hit. Feel better yet? :p

I've only played buzzed or drunk a couple times and it seemed like I was playing fine (of course I don't have a soundboard recording to prove that). Although I've played after smoking weed and downing some form of caffeine almost every show when I was still smoking the stuff. That I know for a fact didn't affect my playing as I have many recordings where the playing is spot on(including a studio recording!) and I think a bit more daring during improv moments. Too each his own I say although I tend to agree with less or no alcohol during and before shows is better. I play stone cold sober all the time now and the only big difference I notice is being less tired after the show and a bit more nervous before i get settled in the "live groove"

420 = the chronic? Would one of you please explain the reference? Sounds all legal and whatnot. :eyebrow:

It's a really long and not all that interesting story, but basically, 3 dudes had this idea to meet up in the woods near their school to smoke weed every day at 4:20. Instead of saying something like "can't wait to smoke weed today after school in the woods at 4:20" they just said, "can't wait till 4:20" and it stuck, and spread from there. In celebration of this accomplishment, stoners everywhere like to light up at 4:20 even today.

At least that's the most credible story. I only say credible because they've tracked these guys down who've verified it.

Also, the date April 20th has become significant for counterculture and legalization movements. Several locations in the USA and Canada stage "smoke ins" on that date. The campus of CU Boulder, Colorado has literally tens of thousands of participants.
