Preamp and DI Box

Ok, at the risk of sounding stupid...

I've always used amps. I have in the past had a DI box, but I am in the midst of researching how to put together a setup for instances where I can go through the PA, can somebody tell me, does a preamp function as a DI? In other words, can I put a preamp between my TC Electronic G-Sharp (or my bass) and a PA board and be able to use the PA in place of an amp?

not all preamps provide DIs.. some do though... for example the Sansamp Bass Driver and MXR M80+...i don't know about the G Sharp... it would usually have an XLR out and it would tell you in the manual.

probably want to use G Sharp - Preamp - DI

like I said there are many good preamp/DI combo boxes
