My Squier P-Bass special is passive

I dig Ps with J necks....AND PJ pups, so I built one from Warmoth parts: Jazz neck with pau ferro board / no face dots, tobacco burst P body with PJ routing, SD Quarter Pound PJ pups-passive-vol-vol-tone controls, black pickguard, input jack on edge, Hipshot Style A bridge, Hipshot Ultra Lite tuners - turned out to be a great bass! Only trouble is, I'm mainly a 5 stringer - I'll have to build a PJ5 next. Can't post pics now because I'm at work - will post a few pics later.

You should consider a US Lakland Duck Dunn, aka 44-64 Custom. This is a Precision with a "Jazz neck", i.e. 1.5" at the nut. From time to time they pop up for sale here on TB, and they go for under $2k. A very nice bass for a reasonable price, IMO. Here's a photo of mine...

BTW, Lakland also has an import line called the Skyline series. They cost about half as much as the US instruments, and some folks here like them a lot too. But I've not tried them.

+1 I love the Skylines, in general, and I recently picked up a Skyline 44-64 Custom at the Summer NAMM Show. It was my favorite bass in the booth, USA or Korean-made.

A P bass with a J neck is not a 'Precision' Bass; is it? The P/J'S with P neck spec's Fender Gives them the 'Precision' name the Jazz neck ones not that I have seen, but may have.

Of course countless others make a Precision 'Style' bass[AKA P bass] with a Jazz 'type' neck:)

I played a Fender '75 Precision with chunky 1.75 neck for 25yrs so the New 1.625 with Modern 'C' or 'D' is my Jazz neck.

Hello: Unless it's one of the P Body/J Neck Instruments that Many Manufactures Produce - It's Just a "Precision Body" with a "Jazz Neck", and, Maybe, an Additional Pickup. I See Some Mentioned as a "Ducky", Probably Referring to the P/J Bass that "Duck" Dunn is Pictured With in the beginning of the book The Fender Bass by Klaus Blasquiz. That's where I Got the Idea for "Mine" - 30 Some Years Ago. I Originally only Added the Jazz Neck to the Precision Body, then 20 Years Later, I had the "Refinish" and the Jazz Pickup Added. Still Have a '69 "Jazz" and a '74 "Precision" that came from the Factory with an "A" (1 1/2" Nut) Neck.

That's what I like: a p-bass with a 1.5" nut Jazz neck. I know the Precision Special is pretty close (not the American Special Precision though!). But the Special has an extra pickup, and they're mostly active basses. I'm a passive kinda guy (just ask my wife :p ) So here's my question:

What stock Precision basses has Fender put out over the years that have Jazz necks and are passive?

(I say stock, because custom p-basses with A necks are both rare, and consequently overpriced IMO.)

The extra pickup's not really a big deal. Aerodyne's are very close to everything I like. I just wish the bodies were ash or alder, not basswood. I've had bad luck with screws (especially strap pins) stripping in basswood.

I think the California Series comes close too. Any others? Or should I just get a Jazz bass I like and route it for a P pickup? :bassist:

You’ve prolly already worked this out (8yrs later ;))...
I actually assembled my first P w/J (Geddy Lee) neck, in 2012, then proceeded to assemble another in 2013 (American Special J neck). Both have, since, been rebadged with ‘P’ waterslides. The Oly White one has had pu changed to an SD Antiquity II & has had Hipshot Lollypop tuners installed! (pics are thru various filters- so look a bit different, etc.)
