Actually I am split on this one. I Much prefer the P-Body and style, but I cannot stand the neck. Conversly, I hate the Jazz body and pups, but I cannot get enough of the neck. I have 14 basses now and only 1 has the P style neck. My 1978 P. Everything else, from my Hondo Longhorn, Modulus, and Fender Special, all have the J-Bass neck. So, I am very split on this one. J-Necks and P-Bodys ;)

I've never got on with Precisions - I've never liked the tone and hate the neck. I use a Stingray where I might need a Precision (I kind of think of a Stingray as a 're-designed' Precision anyway) and a Jazz (which I use most of the time)...

I like the P tone but much prefer the J bass for asthetic reasons....I love the Jazz body shape and balance. My Deluxe Jazz V can cop a P tone fairly well actually (good enough for my purposes anyway). I don't think one is better than the other...just whatever floats your boat.

J or P? I'll take V, as in V-Bass. Precision, Jazz, MusicMan, fretless, lead guitar...? Got 'em at the flick of a switch.

Well, it's on a Jazz body...with a Jazz neck.....with 2 J pickups... :p

I voted Jazz only because it works best overall for the gig I'm in now. Also, I like the Jazz neck and overall playability. All that said, howerver, the P is an essential in the studio. Could never imagine having one available to track with.

I will have to disagree with the point that the P is a "one-trick pony" however, as between the tone pot and where in relation to the pick-up you play can create a roomful of tones, not to mention finger or pick-style options. No, definitely not a one-trick pony. No you won't want it for slap, but the tones can be very soulful. If you had to come the gig with JUST ONE BASS, the Precision might just be the thing you'd want to have. It will sit in the mix just right, no matter. Just my .02. Wow, guess maybe I should have voted for the Presision????

I dunno, it depends. I've used a P for slap when I want to get that real 70's vibe on some BB King tunes I'm doing lately. Definitely not the "modern" sound at all...very dated, but in a cool way that works sometimes.

Sometimes.

Jazz basses sound so much punchier and have much better slap tone. I feel like P basses are one trick ponies, with big bulky uncomfortable bodies and action.

I don't know. My P has very low action and I can get a variety of sounds by varying the position of my plucking hand. Just my opinion though.

I prefer a my Jazz. I had a P for a couple months and didn't really like the tone enough to keep it.

The only bassist I can think of who I like a lot who played a P-Bass is Paul Jackson, he had great tone from that thing!

Any other good bassists use a P-bass, seems like most of them use Jazz basses? Not that there is anything wrong with P-bass's, just not my cup of tea, ya dig?
