I'll try to do this, as a service for you, though I don't like that old design at all, and the PU cover does not fit the way I play. (but yes, I know it was James Jamerson's model)
And, as well as signature series (in all brands, not especially Fender's), I believe these high-priced reissues are more a matter of marketing than one of quality. Did you try this model ?

Yeah, I tried it and of all the P's I have played through, it definitely had the richest tone of all. Marketing means fairly little to me...unfortunetly the sound of the one with the highest price was also the finest of the bunch; see what you think?
Mad Subwoofer : what I meant is that in many cases, signatures or high-end reissues are pricey but don't sound that much better than standard models.
Nevertheless, given that you tried it and feel it greater, I may admit it is a great reissue, though, as I said before, it's not my cup of tea.
But I'll try it on Tuesday.

The Jazz votes are outnumbering the P votes. For awhile there, I was worried. When I cast my vote early on, the P votes were actually outnumbering the Jazz votes.

Well I voted P - 'cos that's what I've got! I've never touched a Jazz - although I now have a hankering after a fretless one now!!!!
I'm not really in a position to compare properly - but I would suggest from what I've heard here they are too very different beasts!!! A comparison like this is probably very subjective - but fun nevertheless!!
The active/passive comparison is something I can do though - but I wonder how valid my input is. Here goes - I own a Precision Special (the 80's one), this has an active switch to bring in the preamp. I use it exclusively in this mode as I think it sounds better. I can switch it to passive and yes, the classic P-bass sound which is absolutely lovely!!! But at the flick of a switch I can add some treble or even some more bass to this sound.
I like my P-bass a lot and wouldn't swap it - but I would be more than happy to add a Jazz or maybe another P-bass to my collection (the Steve Harris signature series looks nice!!!)

I recently got an American Deluxe P Bass 4 and it is terrific! I can't say enough about the playability and SOUND. $895 from The Bass Place in Arizona- and that includes the ash bodied ones.
I wish there was a spot to vote both!
I have 2 J's and one P and looking for my 2nd P as we speak.
I play them both equal depending on what has the newer strings
True! they are both different animals but you can get great tone out of both, A good J or P will usually sound great in any band or recording situation.

It is a P....but has a J pickup and can sound pretty close to a J...or a P....or a mix of both
Maybe 75% P and 25% J
Maybe 75% P and 25% JI found a '69 P-Bass at Norm's Rare guitars-
It had been spray-painted black, the bridge was
rusted out, the machine heads had been replaced w/ 80's Fender "disco-style", needed new frets,
and the electronics were shot! All this for $400!
...But the neck had the best feel I have ever played, with a maple board-I think the guy at the factory had a good day back then.
I refinished this to natural alder, re-fretted, replaced pickguard, used Duncan P-style p/u's,
and used Fender OEM machine heads & a BadAssII
bridge-black chrome. Light tung-oil on neck.
This instrument has a total vibe, it sings, has no
dead spots whatsoever. I wouldn't give it up
for any other instrument- I got lucky!
So- put my vote down for "P-Bass" !

I don't have a Fender Jazz, but the ones I've played didn't blow me away. I prefer a P bass to a jazz. My Yammer 5 string has jazz style pups,a nd it's a real sweet bass. I can't say one is better than the other though.

The Steve Harris is nice but unless you're really lucky you find one anymore. Sorry about this letdown.

I love both. just got a hot-rodded p-bass myself. love both and this combines the sound of both so what more can you ask for? if i was to choose between a p or a jazz i'd probably go for the p-bass: funky looking, funky sounding!

If you are playing thru someone elses crap at an open jam--I pick the jazz bass because of the different sounds you can get.
Personally, I like the feel and sound out of a p-bass, especially the oldschool tele basses with the REAL fat neck. The sting bass is actually nice. The worst is when you get the p-bass thru some cats rig with a single 18 speaker. It gives the muddy fart-in-the-bathtub sound!

I voted J. I have had the opportunity to play both over the years and the J just feels more versatile. I wouldn't snub a P if one came my way again
