PRIMUS

The savior of family values.

This part of your statement has me laughing my butt off. I never thought of Primus as anything but radical and anarchic, which is why I dig them so much. I never really saw them as a matchmaker or a "cupid," or ones who promote family values. Your statement has so much irony for me that its really funny. That was definately a good story.

Primus: "Bringing loved ones together through wacky, let fearless, bass-oriented assaults."

I know it sounds ironic, but in all seriousness, I do think of Primus as being "family friendly". Primus has the occasional drug reference, yes, but they are generally veiled references. They generally do not use foul language (yes I can think of a word that starts with B and also the occasional sons-a-B as well, but these words are not the most vulgar) Primus does not have any "dark" or Satanic themes like some of the music I enjoy (Slayer etc - stuff I grew up on…) The entire Primus catalog is actually fairly benign lyrically. The DVD has only three scenes that I find inappropriate for young audiences. The most inappropriate in my opinion is one of the hidden scenes (Easter eggs) - the Jesus and Bob scene - but my children are not able to access the Easter eggs so that's not a problem. One portion of Brain's interview is questionable content for children (in regards to what happens on the road and how he illustrated it with his belt…) -but I think that goes over the kids heads. And, on the Cheesy Home Video section, the explanation of the microphone being the "xxxx tickler" is a little uncomfortable for me to watch with the kids - but that is all of the exceptions I can think of. The Laquerhead video was banned by MTV, but I told my kids that and I told them that I didn't agree with that. I told them what the song is about, but explained to them that the song is not in favor of huffing gas - it is speaking out against it. For the most part, they are fairly family friendly - especially when you compare it to network television and the crap that Britney and Christina are selling to girls as young as Kindergarten. BTW, the Frog Brigade albums are all 100% family friendly in my opinion. My kids got into the Purple Onion album before I did, it took a while to grow on me but they liked it from the get go. My kindergartener walks around singing John The Fisherman all the time.

I totally agree with you lyrically. My ideas about their "radicalness" I think comes more from their unique approach to their music. Some of their riffs and ideas just seems to come from left field. Their songs have wierd structures, and seem to follow no rules. I love how some of their music blends these carnival, almost cartoonish themes with funk, rock, punk, thrash, etc. To me, they are unique, fresh, and downright funny. I like bands that work to create something totally new, and not be limited by some of the boundaries that limit other bands. Many other bands effect me this way too, but Primus is fresh on the brain cause I just saw them, and you comment sparked these thoughts. My senseless ramble is over now.

Anyway, it is cool that you and your ex kind of patched things up that way.

I also think its cool that you let your children listen to Primus. IMO, I think they will end up being more creative because they were exposed to good music at an early age.

See you there buddy!

saw them last time and enjoed it oh so much
Hey, if you see me, call my name out (Aaron). I don't have any TB gear, so I'll be wearing a yellow t-shirt, black shortsleeve button up over top (unbuttoned), black pants, and Doc Martins. The pants may have the lower parts zipped off, and hence, turned into shorts -- it all depends on the weather. My brother is your age, 6'3, kinda portly, and he's got a beard. Call us out if you see us!

I went to the Toronto show. It was absolutely amazing. Tim's drum solo was 100% better than the Tour de fromage solo. They seemed to enjoy themselves while playing more this time too. I think it was because of the venue, last time in the Kool Haus the sound wasn't that great and it always feel cramped where the Hummingbird centre was wide open and the sound totally perfect.

I too was hoping for Laquer Head -- it's the first Primus song I ever heard, and it was the one that made me instantly fall in love with the band. It was only a mild disappointment though, considering the sheer AWESOMENESS of the rest of the show -- also, Frizzle Fry is my favourite CD ;). Too Many Puppies was intense...everyone in the entire place singing along. Holy-hell. Mix was great, volume was PERFECT. I didn't even need the Sonic II's I bought in part for the concert. The show was soooo great, Les was great on stage. Drum solo was soooooooooo cool -- especially where Les came out in the gorilla mask and played the whamola. Awesome, awesome show.
Another interesting note -- the security was absolutely pitiful. My brother walked right past the woman, and all she did was kinda feel the shirt I was wearing that went over my pockets. He even used his multitool (with pliers and saw blade, they would've confiscated it) to get his ear plugs out of the tube so if he did eventually need them, they were readily at hand (they had previously been for some reason shoved into the bottom of the tube, unretrievable by bare hand).

The only complaint I had was that there were TOO MANY STONERS. My brother and I left smelling so strongly of weed that my pants were still reeking of it this morning, and we didn't even smoke any.

The rest of the weekend was great -- I spent the morning hoofing it around TO with my brother and stopped in at the Silver Snail and Steve's Music Store. In Steve's, I got to play two Alembics, a Bongo, and I bought a Digitech BP50 multi-effects.

You didn't go to the show at Meadowbrook in Michigan did you?? I didn't even get padded down, i just handed her my ticket and walked right in. Kinda made me mad, i could have brought my digi cam and took some cool shots.

How long did Primus play? I've got tix for the NYC show on Tuesday, the ticket says it's at 8:00 and Marcus Miller goes on at 10:30 a few minutes away from there..hmmm decisions decisions.

you're looking at about 3 hours. (including the intermission) they started playing at 8:05 and were finished at 11:00. of course this particular venue in pittsburgh has a time limit because of the noise ordinance. :scowl:
