Prince has passed away.

Hearing "When Doves Cry" in fourth grade blew my mind. Ironic since there is no bass line on it. I'm Prince binging today.

Since for the most part I'm a jam band guy and a Prince fan I love this:



Since Prince was militant about others using his material it makes this that much more impressive.

One evening about 10-15 years ago, I was watching some late night talk show, I wish I could remember which one. It was winding down and almost out of time, and there was a musical guest, and I was barely interested and not paying very good attention.

Suddenly, there's Prince crashing the studio. The place absolutely erupted. An impromptu jam begins, and there he is, twirling and singing and playing. He absolutely stole the show. Then he got up on top of the grand piano, and kept twirling and singing and playing. And it was beyond amazing. And then time ran out and the network cut away. I imagine that jam kept going for a good long time.

I know he kind of had a habit of doing that kind of thing. I wish I could remember the date and show, I'd love to watch that again for old time's sake. Anyone have any details about what I described?

It definitely sounds to me like he is thumping on the neck, a hammered C to D, C, CC, then a pluck (which could be the Tele).

I have perceived it this way since 79.

My source is my ears. If there is bass guitar on that track, it is buried under synths.

Listen to the lick at (around) 3:42 under the keyboard solo. Sounds like a bass to me!

This is a sad day in music history. Not only was prince a great bass player but he was a great musician and songwriter. He will be missed.

His genius will be missed. What an inspiration he was to so many. One of the best examples of pure talent and supernatural gifting.
I remember when the cover of Bassplayer Magazine came out with Prince holding his custom black and maple Lakland with the black fist headstock.
My favorite Prince bass.
To this day, black and maple basses with black headstocks are my favorite.

I was just listening to "When Doves Cry" and the synth passage just before the last out chorus reminds me of something Zappa would've written. Then the synth string counterpoint that closes the song. On top of that the lyrics about how our parents behavior effects our views on relationships and sex. This is really sophisticated stuff.
