Problems with my SWR

I was playing last night using a SWR workingman 12 and I had to finish the gig using the PA system as my amp.

Here's what happened: Every time the preamp clip light got lit, the amp would stop producing sounds. This would last for about 10 seconds and then I would be able to play normally.
I checked out the fuse and it was fine (I had had problems with the fuse before), but I noticed that the back of the amp was really hot (after playing 5 or 6 tunes at a moderate volume).


Did any of you had similar experiences with an amp? If so, was it expensive to fix it?

That's a bummer. I'm on my second WM12 and both (as well as the WM10 I used for college big band) have been reliable even when hot. Did you have the limiter engaged when this happened?

I have had really mixed feelings about a lot of SWR gear the past few years.

I have used their combos quite a bit the last few years as rented backline. I have experienced inconsistencies in sound, headroom, and have the personal distinction of blowing one up.

On the plus side they can be some of the warmest sounding amps I have used, but they just have never really inspired a lot of confidence from me. I sense that in some models, clipping the pre-amp continuously seems to generate an inordinate amount of heat.

Maybe their higher-end gear is more reliable, I don't know.

Yes..

And the volume was pretty low (I was playing latin jazz with a KYDD E.U.B.)
