Lower profile, but the Chicago acts in the Prog scene that I would recommend off the top of my head:

Caught on Cline (pop-jam bend)
Sleepersound (Sigur Ros bend)
Sons of Ra (Fishbone as a jam trio, awesome live show)
Tautologic (orchestral odd-time pop. Disclosure- I play bass for them so hesitate to self promote)
Winterhawk (Jordan Macarus is a monster player)

Civil Surface and The Polite Force are killer albums! I think Egg got a bit overlooked amidst all the other keyboard-led prog trios of the 70s, but I think I'd rather listen to them than Refugee or (especially) ELP.

Ahh yes, Refugee, poor Jackson and Davison get jilted for the second time by a keyboardist who was going on to bigger and better things.

I used to listen to Transatlantic, The Flower Kings, IQ, etc., but they are far too mellow for me now. Lately, I've been listening to The Pineapple Thief, Porcupine Tree, and my all time favorite, Opeth. If you're into the heavier stuff, also check out Gojira.
