i'm gonna try and record mine tonight... t'aint nuthin special because some of those chords are very new to me (as is theory)...but what they hey... better than not trying at all I say!

Actually, please can someone explain what "sus4" means after a chord... ie. what note in the chord is changed, added, removed or whatever?

I'm feeling all self-consctious now... I kind of want to know the standard, because I'll spend more time on it if everyone else is a ****-hot player!!! (I'm not you see).

But this isn't the type of chord we're talking about here - so to take your example - it's C9sus4 - which would be C,F,G,Bb and D. You could think of this as a Gmin7 chord with C in the root.

I think that most pianists just voice them as a triad in the right hand with the root. So the last chord was G9 sus4 and I would say a triad of CFA with G as the root. Dmin7 over G - leaving out the D.

But I'm not a pianist and don't have one in front of me right now, so I could be wrong! ;)

I'm ashamed to say that means about as much to me as a one-legged drunken icelandic nudist trying to explain quantum mechanics in mime... :rolleyes:

Just Kidding - this is what i think I understand(?)

C = root
F = 4th
G = perfect 5th
Bb = flat Major 7th - - why?
D = Major 9th

OK, so where does the triad bit come in - what is a triad?

- and why is it called sus4? - what does sus mean?

I'd really appreciate your help here.. bear in mind I've had ONE lesson tho - the second is coming up soon!

Well any 9th chord is really a dominant 7th with an added ninth - so if I see a C9 as a bassplayer - I will generally treat it is the same way as if it was written C7 - so it must have flattened 7th.

A triad is just a three note chord - pianists will often leave out roots and fifths, as the bass player is covering those (hopefully ;) ) so in this case all we are doing is leaving out the G, as this is the note which tells you least about the nature of the chord in this case - but this is a personal choice.

Also the 4th and 5th together could be quite discordant. ;)

A shirt solo!!?? have you ever heard the Bonzo Dog Dooda Band song "Shirt"? This is brilliant and features a solo by Roger Ruskin-Spear on the "electric shirt collar" ! :D

Getting back to the subject - I have played countless solos over this sequence - live with a band and practising at home with my microcomposer! But I have no way of downloading any music from the net or recording myself digitally....:(

Aah. A pretty big set-back admittedly!

How do you use talkbass - at work? - I downloaded the allstars mp3 at work - zipped it to three floppys and took it home... the recorded on le PC, burnt back to CD and emailed to Pacman from work!

(Yell.com were kind... they agreed to pick up the bill for the download and email)

Well - I do have a PC at home - but it is ancient - not even a pentium and has no way of recording anything or burning CDs !!

I just never use it - when at home, I'm playing music, practising, rehearsing, playing/going to gigs - anything but using a PC!! ;)

That is 110% understandable. I set-up my home 'studio' only very recently and it's noticebley detracted from the amount of time I play bass.

I find myself slapping in the kitchen while waiting for the kettle to boil (ooh-err, missus!)....

Because I work with the net, obviously I use a PC all day - it means I know what I'm doing and managed to get he home studio set-up and working relatively quickly and without any help, but it also means I'm sick and tired of staring at a screen by the time I get home from work.

I so need to get out of the office day-job. It sucks arse, as they say.

Stop complaining and step on up into the 21st century technologically. :D You can get a decent PC for less than $1,000 US.

More on topic:

Is this progression available as a band-in-the box thingie or am I going to have to download the MP3?
