Proper Etiquette to Quit band

It would be best to just talk to your brother and tell him your issues and move on. Tell the other guys politely you just want to move forward and this situation is not what you want. Keep a professional attitude and start to look for other musicians who you would like to work with. As long as you have your gear, attitude and drive towards a musical goal you need to keep looking for the right situation to create music you enjoy. Good Luck.

Whenever possible, try not to burn bridges. 9 months and nothing's been written is enough of a reason to leave. I agree that face to face is the best, it doesn't sound like you have anything booked so that shouldn't be a problem. Do get any equipment out of the practice space. Give them no reason to bad mouth you, a reputation is something that takes a lifetime to build and 5 minutes to destroy.

Good luck

Find something better.

Yes to all of this.

Sounds to me like this band is going nowhere. If you can convince your brother of the same thing and you both quit together, it will be a lot easier all the way around. I assume you're on reasonably good terms with your brother so I'd put it all on the line with him first.

And yes, personal conversation is the best way to make the break. Email is weak and texting is even weaker. Good luck.

+1

When I quit my last band, it was similar circumstances. After 7 months we had 4 songs, almost all my ideas were shot down and the drummer wasn't keeping time. I called a band meeting and only the guitarist showed up. I told him I was done, and texted the drummer that I wasn't going to wait there all night for him (already had been there 2 hours), I was done playing, and it was nothing personal. I think it has a lot to do with who you are playing with also.

I had one situation where I was playing in a punk band and the 2 month in singer tries to make "rules" for the band. They were mad because my car wouldn't start and I couldn't be at the jam spot to practice before that night's gig. I told them, if we aren't ready now, we'll never be ready. They got mad because they were trying to change up a song and I wasn't there. Who does that? Come to find out, it was one extra note, an octave or some stupid accent. I talked with the drummer, only guy I was cool with at that point, he was telling me they were going to fire me. Then the singer calls up and insults me. Really laid in to me. I heard they played one more show and it sucked. Must have been a karma thing.

You guys are incredibly helpful right now!:) The main reason I started the thread is I have never quit a band. All my previous ones dissolved for one reason or another, and I never had to quit myself. Update to situation: Guitarist still drunk. I spoke to my brother about my intentions, turns out he was thinking the same thing. Me and him will probably quit together, and we both have potential bands lined up to join already. We also agreed that we wanted to never cut ties with the drummer, but don't want to be associated with an alcoholic anymore. Thanks huge guys for the advice, it all helps. I got a few laughs as well, some of you gave advice so well it was like you were stalking me! :hiding:
