Pros and 'Unusual' Basses.

I never understood looking to hire someone to do anything and not trust their decision making ability. To me, that's either being a control freak or just arrogant. Those who act like they have it all figured out never have anything figured out and everyone knows that!

I don't quite get that? If you hired someone to redo your kitchen, you'd leave all the decisions up to them?

Do you also think that just because you hire a recording engineer, that automatically makes them more knowledgable than you? Can't say I understand that kind of thinking. Especially if it's my music and my vision that they'll be working on. I don't see that as being arrogant, nor a control freak. I simply see it as working with somebody.

Those customs were obviously built as replicas of the original Fender insturments. So many companies make thier money building jazz bass clones with modified headstocks and electronics. The jbass and the strat to me are
Perfect designs and Leo Fender deserves his credit.

You really like Fender.

We get it.

Marcus Miller's bass was modded well after Alembic started making active electronics. I'm quite sure the ones he plays now are custom shop. Geddy's original Jazz was a pawn shop find, but he plays custom shop Fenders now, even including a Jaco Fretless custom shop. Sting has played many basses, and his work with the Police was largely done on Spector fretless. He does seem to favor his vintage Fender these days, though.
The stingray was the first active bass for the masses.

You do know that the G&L L2000, which was the model mentioned in the original post, was designed and originally built by Leo Fender, right?

Leo got it right
The p and J are perfect designs
Most other solidbody basses owe
Homage to them. The only real advancment has been active electronics and he started that with musicman. Why are so many high end customs just jazz or p copies.

You can buy a high end clone or
Buy into the history and heritage
Of the company.
To buttress your statement as I love my Precision V and it's my go to bass but consider that Fender as mass-production owned the tones that set the standard in our ears and thus really shaped modern music and how we hear it. It's not a good or bad thing nor meant to be conspiracy sounding. It's just how contemporary music history has played out given the tools and how they shaped music and musicians sounds.

Yes i do.
To me g&l s look llke Fenders
With different pick up options and kind of mm like bridge.
Nothing particularly special
Like a mm and a fender had a baby.
The stingray is classic, iconic
Widely accepted unlike any G and L
Honestly how many of us even know the model name of any
GnL bass? Im sure theyre
Awsome though.

But just because you haven't heard something before doesn't mean it can't work. If you aren't willing to try aren't you being dismissive?

There is truth on both sides.

As the professional musician, you should have an idea/opinion on what will best fit the sound, but you ultimately defer to others preferences.

As an engineer or artist, you should trust any professional you're hiring to know how to fit/create the sound you're looking for, but you should also have a clear vision of what that is.

I get requests to specifically use a P bass all of the time, because the engineer or artist knows that's the vibe that they want; no one has ever has ever noticed whether or not it said 'Fender' on the headstock, they've only commented that it's a great sounding and looking P bass.

I like many brands but i respect the design anf engineering that has influenced all solidbody basses.

No one is disrespecting Fender, the question is why you don't see more G&L's, or one of Leo's other brands nearly as frequently.

Other folks have done a pretty good job of summing that up: namely that the P and J bass styles are the original classic's (so everyone knows the ballpark of their sound very well) and Fender is by far the largest manufacturer of basses in those styles.

For me to buy something other than an MIA Fender it would have to be substantially different. I don't see the point of paying more for the same stolen design. I mean those high end Fender clones. If they were so good, why not go out on a limb and design their own bass?
I repect Ibanez for going for a different look and finish, they make some really nice basses that I would buy in an instant. I'm thinking of an Ibby 5er actually...hmmm
Well G&L is Leo fender's company, so its more like the continuation of his designs than a theft of any kind. I can't speak to lakland or sadowsky or any of those gents, but G&L definitely has a right to carry on Leos legacy

"Better" is a subjective term. That being said, let's say a bass truly is better -- Fender, although not the "best," is certainly high quality. Fender is, however, the #1 manufacturer of guitars, and they offer pros huge kickbacks and benefits in equipment that anyone would be crazy not to take advantage of. That's why they choose Fender.

Most of thier endorsers already played fendet before they were endorsers. Cant think of anyone who started playing a fender
Due to an endorsment

maybe because people ask to have P or J pickup in their high end basses because they used to how they sound ? since they want to make money they do it
