This! Tone is super personal that's why we all get on talkbass to talk about it. If fender is part of that equation for you (ie if they offer to endorse you and set you up with discount gear) then so be it. My beat up jag and my active jazz 5er definitely get a workout from me!

Don't get me wrong I appreciate killer tone and love Fenders and experimenting with amp and effect setting etc.
But I think in most cases your audience will not hear a huge difference between a high end Fender and a Sadowsky, Lull etc.,

Interestingly enough, as I started to get busier with my band and transition from a "hobby" to semi professional with the goal of doing it full time, my warwick stays at home and I started leaning more and more towards fenders and those are my two main basses. Non of them MIA... Not for any reason other than I landed on two great basses I fell in love with regardless of where they were made. I still record and practice with the wick but the fenders just have an utilitarian, rugged feel I just don't get with it. They're colorless and feel they just transmit what my fingers are playing while the Warwick just adds too much uniqueness (for lack of a better word) and I just want less bells and whistles on stage. Even the one active bass, I run pretty flat.


Or I'm just full of it and just wanted something w a pickguard

Next time you're in Melbourne, come over to my place and play my Sandberg for half an hour. I think that you will change your mind.

Yes, absolutely no arguments from me. For whatever reason, the industry seems stuck in a P and J rut, so they are the tools we all have to have.

I am mediocre bassist and a value buyer, so my only addition to the above is that IMO you can get better value from Fender clones. They're still just tools that do the same job. Here in Australia a custom built Sandberg is not much more expensive than an MIA Fender and much much better. Otherwise, I'll stick to MIM Fenders thanks very much.

Sandberg, Lull, Sadowsky, Lakland etc are not stupid. They simply couldn't get away with "copying" Fender and not adding value. They do.

BTW... I'd love a G&L ASAT. Those things are sexy.

Ive heard nothing but good things about Sandbergs. I just find it hard to buy something that is such an exact copy but i guess its like
A violin/cello or classical guitar or piano even. They all look pretty much the same.
Just different materiels and build qualities.

And being from california itd be hard for me to buy a german jazz bass. Wait arent they called californias?
