If they're harping about your gear rather than your sound or playing, then IMO it may be time to move on, (unless there's a dependability issue)... Like yourself, I use both a Dano, (Longhorn RI with the rosewood bridge and cheapo tuners), and a '78 Musicmaster to round out my stable a bit. I'll gig with either one any time I please, thank you very much! Both are dependable, great sounding and playing axes that I have setup perfectly for me...

It's not the tool, it's the craftsman, (within reason...)

the offspring bassist uses an ATK too, and they have been playing together(exept the drummer who left the band in the earlie days of 2004) for a while.

Now he uses an Ibanez new thing, RD series? Maybe just for videos, because he is endorced by them i belive.

couldn't you always just invest in some good pickups for your cheapo? That should make it sound at least a little better.

I still have my 300$ beginner bass, i really need to get a new bass, i'm starting to get sick of mine. With my budget i won't be able to get anything more then $700 or $800, but that's probably more then i probably i need anyways.

My guitarist gets all over me because i have a few basses but none on top tier level of his Fender and Ric stuff. I guess my next one will be the inevitible Precision but i like having a bunch of them and my Dano and Musicmaster are def. quality pieces.
Anyway, with all lower-priced instruments out there today, who plays bargain basses on the pro level? I've seen bands with the Dano reissues but no one name springs to mind. I know Trujillo endorses Fernandes and they dont cost much, at least not all of them. Anyone else?

Trujillo now endorses Zon basses. He has his own sig bass, and it's not a cheapie.

Historically on TB, I've always said - "Sink your money into your amplification, not your bass." I've caught a lot of flak about that but I still stand by it.

Notice that I can't think of one artist mentioned so far who uses cheap amplification.

Not to completely derail this thread, but I can't picture SRV ever playing Mexican Strats. Most often you see pictures of him with #1, Lenny, and that custom made job with his name across the fretboard. He did have a few others, but those were the main ones.

Besides, didn't the Fender Mexico plant open in the 90s?

Yup, I agree. Even a 5000$ Fodera will sound like poop through a 10W Crate combo.

Having said that, I should definitely get a real amp to match my 2000$ Spector...

Joey Spampinato's Dano is an original, not the reissues they commonly sell on ebay. The vintage Danos are highly prized if not priced but they would fetch more than $300. Maybe not much more.

I met him once at a festival. He let me play that very bass


It sounded MUCh nicer when he played it, though!

What is the definition of "cheap" here? Below $1,000, or below $700? There are a lot of "chep" basses out there. You can get a pretty decent Fender Jazz bass for $420. My Active J-Bass was only $520. Another one of the good "cheap" basses is made by OLP. It's like a gemeric Music Man bass. I'm getting an OLP 5-string for $250, and it does sound great! I thought I'd just share that with you guys.

And one more thing... it doesn't matter what you paid for the bass because if you break it in properly, your bass will get better with age anyway.
