Yup, I agree. Even a 5000$ Fodera will sound like poop through a 10W Crate combo.

Having said that, I should definitely get a real amp to match my 2000$ Spector...

You sir, are very correct. I have been playing through a 10w crate combo and it does sound very much how I imagine poop would sound if it made noise. Relief is on the way though. QSC should arrive shortly.

I'm stumped as for pro bassists that play cheap basses!

I think the Fender Standard is just a little north of the line i was looking for. Now, Squires ..... But people have come up with some good ones.
I bought a Epiphone LP Jr., in part because I read Leslie WEst was going to have a signature model of it. Now i know he doesnt play them live (and the model neve came out, i think) but it's a grat little $99 guitar.

I read about in the Bass Player where Oteil is on the cover holding a goldfish in a plastic bag. He said he needed a more traditional tone and ended up using a red MIM Jazz that belonged to a roadie.

Good point, but let's go a bit further :

Even a 5000$ Fodera and a 3000$ Aggie rig will sound like poop if they are used by a crappy-chopped poop...

In the other hand, I'm not sure we'd able to hear a big difference either Jeff Berlin plays his Dean Signature bass or a Cort New Action Bass...

I'm sure someone mentioned this fact in this thread somewhere..but if you spent $200 or $20,000 on a bass is completely irrelevant if you can't play and can't groove. I can hand my inexpensive Essex J bass off to any top bassist and they would still smoke on it! It's in the hands, heart and mind of the player. That's the bottom line IMHO

Mike Farris of Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies often uses a bottom of the line Epi Les Paul Jr on stage.
