I'm not sure I really understand what a Punk Tone is, but didn't early punk bands use amps like old Fender Tube Amps driven to overdrive or distortion?

Punk Tone = P Bass + big, loud amp. Simple.

What subgenre are you going for? If your cranking a ton of distortion go Solid State or Class D, I use a tube amp for clean tones. I've played Hardcore punk for years. Ampeg 810 for all of it along with a GK 700RBMK II with Boss ODB for distortion, or Fender Bassman 300 pro for the clean tones.

Considering Sid barely knew how to play his instrument and was unplugged most of the time, I'd seriously question any opinion he had on amps. Or much of anything else actually, musical or otherwise.

I lugged (and sold..it's STILL in use...) an older ampeg 350 around this lovely country for over twenty years. I bought it new in 1987 and it's loud enough for all the punk clubs we ever played, with or w/o FOH. NO IDEA aboot the new stuff...+1 on the acoustic control stuff, loud and punk as it gets. best of luck, chum~

I agree, as well as any bass guitar.
I never really "get" the questions about what's the best gear for a certain genre.

+1 on low headroom. A cranked tube amp or even some solid state amps sounds great to me!

plus as a working player - something you can roll in/roll out and set up quickly, with decent tone, is the goal. Gig once a month or every few months with a car or van? Sure go for the elaborate set-up..gigging twice or three times a week in various venues? Go with something manageable..

Indeed, why not? When I saw/opened for Minor Threat, the bass player had a Fender P and an Ampeg SVT and fridge, and Baker and Preslar both had Les Pauls and Marshall halfstacks. I don't buy the notion that you can't be punk if you're using good gear. And man, Minor Threat sounded incredible.

I try to avoid envy...but dayum..opened for the (imho) definitive American punk band? Awesome..you should start a thread on this alone. Listening to their stuff I imagine an absurd level of 'tight' on stage..

Another second on the Peavey's. I've never personally owned one but I've played through them on many a backlined show.

Edit: Oops I have owned a Peavey Firebass 700.

I really like that series (Nitrobass, Firebass, DeltaBass iirc - and you can find them now for very good value)

my punk tone was a $ 265 dollar gibson grabber, a $125 dollar sunn 2000s , and a $100 dollar Marshall IBS 115 cab, I miss the 90s, before everybody wanted vintage gear

Flouride used an Acoustic 150b amp with an Acoustic 402 cabinet
