Indeed, why not? When I saw/opened for Minor Threat, the bass player had a Fender P and an Ampeg SVT and fridge, and Baker and Preslar both had Les Pauls and Marshall halfstacks. I don't buy the notion that you can't be punk if you're using good gear. And man, Minor Threat sounded incredible.

Check out fender rumble, I get great punk tone out of mine and they can be had dirt cheap. Also, and stay with me here, my swr amps' super clean tone make it highly receptive to good overdrives and fuzzes. That treble heavy clank with the bottom to anger the elderly is there, and mine are beat up enough to make dee Dee proud

Another second on the Peavey's. I've never personally owned one but I've played through them on many a backlined show.

Edit: Oops I have owned a Peavey Firebass 700.

I think it was the old red-face SWR, but one of those in to an Ampeg fridge produces a very unique tone. It's hard to describe but it works great for punk. It's got this 'mwah' type thing that reminds me of Husker Du.

A good punk bass amp? Get one that doesn't care about you, fashion, authority, or your parents. Sorry, I couldn't resist! Seriously, I'd look into a used Ashdown ABM500 EVO II and a 6x10 cab. I think the Ashdown stuff would nail a great punk tone and give you some versatility if you ever move outside that genre too.

Interesting. Was still using the Eden head and DNA cabs when the Second Heapin' Helpin' tour came through NYC. ...but I guess that's a couple of years ago already.

Just goes to show the punk is in the bassist, not the gear.

I remember one of my early bands was kind of a bluesy Stones-meets-Replacments/Tom Waits group and the guitar player had an ancient Marshall 50 watt head and a 4x10 cabinet with torn speaker cloth and one ripped speaker.

Edit: I had a GK 400RB and an Energy 2x15 cab.
