If you record DI signals, you can always reamp them. So anyone could take the bass track, and bring it through any bass amp/cab, and use any mic to record it in any room.

yep, it's an AKG D112...i took it out of the box and looked at it last night...i'm just not a mic guy...i've got one of those perforated aluminum shields that go around it for sort of like a simulated 'treated' room...i'll have to mess around and see how that works...i still haven't gotten my computer yet, but i've been trying to track down some deals...i'll keep ya posted...oh yeah, i'm also going to get one of those radial reampers, and i'm checking into a BBE DI1000 for some additional cool sounds...i'll record everything direct, and then back out to my eden rig for reamping...i think it's going to sound pretty good

You don't really need a reamp to reamp - it just makes reamping a little bit more convenient.

I don't have tons of experience reamping, but I haven't run into trouble using auxillaries (and even a headphone out) on a couple boards rather than reamp boxes. Maybe I'm just lucky. In the past, I've mainly reamped for lo-fi effect stuff (i.e. running drums through stomp boxes/funky amp).

I'm pretty sure reamp boxes work like DIs in reverse, so they buffer a balanced, low impedance, high level signal for a unbalanced, high impedance input (i.e. a guitar amp input). I've heard that without a reamp you can get a significant change in tone, including treble gain/loss (from the lack of impedance matching), distortion (from too much signal going to the input), and ground hum. Those symptoms make sense.

i just saw that you can get a radial j48 and an x amp reamp box in a single package that comes with a sweet little box that looks like what i carry my DV-2 probes around on my submarine :D i may just go with that...radial is the stink, and i my as well save a little bit of money...300 bucks for the j48 and reamper...on another note, i wonder if you could use a bassbone to reamp since it has the boost control and level control on it...maybe you could counter for the weaker signal by adjusting the boost? heck, i dunno...

so, was talking to the studio guru i work with and he's suggested using a slipstreamed version of XP on one partition (say, 100 gig), and a smaller partition for web browsing that's linux based (50 gig or so) and leaving the rest of the hard drive in FAT 32 format...i really don't know what all that means, and i've never used linux before, but i know i better learn...the new TTWCS fire control system that's now on SSGN's will run on linux in the near future, or that's the plan...i'll be operating it, so i figure what the hey...he's going to set it up for me and show me how to dual boot, so we'll see how it works out

ok, i think i'm going to go with the radial reamp kit that has the J48 and XAMP...anyone know who's got the best price on these guys?

on another note, my computer shipped on friday and should b here tomorrow :D when i get it together, i'll post a pic...hopefully by the end of the week i can post in the 'post your studio' thread... :hyper:

here's an update...i've missed delivery of my computer twice this week and when i signed the form to have it left at my door, they said dell always gives them crap for doing that, so they won't leave it...my wife is picking it up for me instead...

also, i'm going with this instead of the BBE or radial:

it's a little labs red eye and doubles as a DI and a reamp box...i've talked to several studio guys that have used these with success, and, though i haven't heard any buzz about them here, i'm going to go with it anyway...it will be arriving tomorrow...it's coming together

i'll have to let you know how the red eye works...

got the computer today...it's half-ass set up and all pulled out from the wall...i turned it on to see if it works...i'll finish setting it up and getting hooked up to the internet tomorrow so i can get my firepod vista drivers and stuff...man, i can't wait to get this thing fired up :hyper: ok, i'm going to bed... :D

well, just got back home from lunch...i ran over there really quick like because i saw that the redeye was out for delivery, and i got home just in the nick of time...i also bolted up a power amp and my aphex aural exciter into the rack on my desk, so i'm getting closer...as soon as i get all the wires straightened up and plugged into the right places, get onto the internet, download the vista drivers for the firepod and get sonar onto the computer, i'll take a few more pics and do a soundcheck...i'm still waiting for the audio files from the band before i start recording the follow up to the first cd i worked on with my seattle rock band...i should be getting those in a few days...almost finished with this thing...

ok, guys, some more pics...i've got installed in my desk a furman power conditioner, my firepod, aphex 104 and a peavey pv-8.5C power amp...i'm eventually going to unload the drivers from my hartke 410xl and have lowdown sound maybe build me a couple of 210 boxes and i can use that as a pretty hefty playback system...not sure if you can see the little labs redeye DI/reamp box under the poweramp, but it's there...man, it's small, but it seems like a tough enough box for studio use...in the other pic you can see my main bass, the lefay herr schwarz and my eden rig...the d115xlt looks odd because i'm waiting to get the driver back from the eden recone shop...long story behind that...at any rate, i'll put some more pics up after i've tested everything, hung up my little 'i love me' pictures/certificates/posters/plaques and whatnot...this has really been great, guys...

ok, guys, here ya go...on the wall, only because i find them interesting are a shellback certificate (i have two :D ), a rednose certificate, a mossback certificate, my navy chief's plaque, plaques from uss maine, uss tennessee and strategic weapons facility pacific and my autographed by everyone in the band moonspell poster :D...you can google the certificates if you like...i have a couple others not hanging...you already know what gear i have...here it is
