PYPB 44: ...like Tetris with boxes, wires and cables

upload_2023-7-8_21-24-13.png

Chain:

Bass - Geezer wah - KORG Pitchblack -Old Blood splitter - Peper’s Pedals Dödsmaskin - Ernie Ball volume - amp.

Blue Loop - Fuzzrocious Rat Tail- EQD Data Corrupter.
Red Loop - EQD Rainbow Machine - H9.

Clean blend is the key. If you dial in a good foundation then can ho as wild as you like with other effects.

I have a guitarist friend that’s a lefty that plays right handed but was complaining that the expression pedal is on the wrong side for him so when I saw yours, that immediately came to mind.

For years, I worked with a lefty who played an upside-down righty guitar. It confuses me to this day.

I’m a righty. Expression control is on my left too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like to use both feet, depending on the song and part. I tried placing my expression left, right, and middle. They're all a sacrifice. I just leave it on the right and got used to it.

Realized I hadn't posted this update. Picture is a little sloppy. Haven't totally fixed everything underneath the board. But here it is:

Haven't seen your board in a while. The H90 calls out to me, even though I can't justify it.

It’s been a while since I posted, so this is a pretty big update to the board. Pedals listed in signal chain order for those that care…

Input > Montreal Assembly PURPLL >
Boss OC-5 Octave >
Fuzzrocious Li’l Fella >
Fuzzrocious M.O.T.H >
Dr. Scientist Frazz Dazzler v2 >
Fuzzrocious Croak >
Red Panda Bitmap2 >
Dr. Scientist Dusk (w/ Moog EP-3 Expression Pedal) >
GFI System Synesthesia (w/ Triple Switch) >
Hologram Electronics Microcosm >
Source Audio Collider >
Keeley Bassist Limiting Amplifier >
TC Electronics Polytune Mini > Output

Everything is cables with EBS gold flat patch cables, powered with a CIOKS DC7 + 8 Expander, and mounted to a PedalTrain Jr Max (a number of PT Pedal Boosters are mounted to the back row for accessibility). I also use another Moog EP-3 beside the board, which changes the pedal it’s controlling based on my mood: usually the Bitmap, Microcosm or PURPLL.

I’m so in love with everything in this set up at the moment… that’s a great feeling!

Nice! I've had my eye on a Synesthesia for a while now, how are you liking it?

A few years ago I remember you dumped your board and went to a Roland synth pickup and board. What were the pros and cons and what brought you back (other than the love of pedals)?

Took some stuff off to better keep my signal path cleaner. Went from 32 to 28 pedals and there is a HUGE increase (to be expected) in tone and load. Sounds crisp. Also had to keep the Boss PS-3 as my main detuner with dual options. Prometheus is an AMAZING filter that easily beats every filter I’ve owned. Overall looks good to me and sound great!

it’s REALLY good. I started using a Terraform to cut down on separate modulation pedals… I am a fairy bit chorus user but always hated digital chorus. That was the one downfall of the Terraform IMO. This, however, is lush and super lovey on bass. I get loads of use out of the arpeggiator stuff and, surprisingly, I’m now using it as my go-to envelop filter. It’s not a cheap pedal, but it does SO much, I can’t imagine being without it now.

As for the midi pickup… yeah. That was a fad and I regretted it. I tried to make it work and for a while, it wasn’t awful, but the latency and lack of knob twiddling eventually put me off. I know it works for some folk, but it wasn’t for me. Lesson learned!

It's NPSD!! (New Power Supply) it's the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power X8

...OK, I really wanted to be excited about this, but it is just a power supply after all.

I got this power supply because I needed something to power my HXS, and about 4 other low(ish) amp demand pedals (with the exception of the Drop.)

A brief unsolicited review, and some words of caution for those who may be interested in this particular unit.

The Good:
-Powers the Stomp great (using the Voodoo Lab current doubler cable), even under high demand presets.
-It's SUPER thin and fits under my Rockboard Duo 2.1, and I bet it fits under the PT flat boards too.
-Dead silent, I mean absolutely silent.

The Bad:
-Build quality...I've had a few Voodoo Lab power supplies before, they were great...but this one, not so much...I have $30 Amazon no namers that feel every bit as solid and didn't cost $170, shame on you Voodoo Lab.
-No IEC style plug, instead you've got this external inline “brick” you need to find a spot for...
-All cables have right angle plugs on both ends...this is great at the pedal connection, but at the power supply side there really isn't enough room to lay them flat...straight plugs there would have been better IMHO. o_O

I'm going to keep it because I got it for a silly good price, it suits my immediate needs, and I've gone through the hassle of fully integrating it into the board so...:meh:

Sad pic since I'm STILL waiting for my Polytune Mini...

Haven't posted in a while, made a few changes but it's been mostly status quo on these boards. Sold the Octabvre mkIII and brought back the OC-2 and got the Tyrant recently. I'm thinking of ditching the tuner pedal for a clip-on to make room for my Volt Thrower. Any opinions on clip on tuners? The Peterson seems like top choice..?

Can't go wrong with the Peterson clip on. It is the most expensive and by far the best.

Word of advise if you play in a band. Clip on tuners do not work well at all in noisy environments (guitars tuning up, drummer warming up, in-between songs banter/music etc)

I don’t have a problem using the Peterson Strobo Clip picking up other noise. I play fretless and do a lot of tuning checks. Even at open mic night with a a lot of noise, it tracks well.

I use one of those cheap-o Snark clip-ons for some rehearsals/loose jam scenarios, and also have never had an issue with tracking during incredibly noisy environments. Maybe that D'Addario was just specifically bad with noise.

I used a Peterson clip-on during one gig, too. Didn't have a problem with tracking my bass during a noisy sound check, but I hated the strobe nature of the tuning! 100% not for me.

RE clip-on tuners:

I like the TC Electronic Poly-Tune and Uni-Tune clip-on tuners. I had used snark, but the connection between the clip and the tuner was a bit weak and wanted something more robust. Snark may have come up with a stronger design, but I the TC tuners work well and seemed less likely to break when my bass gets knocked over or I bang the head into something (I know: don't do that, but I'm a spaz).

The poly-tune will allow you to tune all your strings at once, supposedly - I haven't used that feature and I suspect it might be better for guitar, but I like them for tuning my bass, one string at a time. So I actually recommend the UNI-Tuner - cheaper, but can only tune one string at a time.

I have not broken one of the TC clip-ons yet. Also: I am pretty sure these work via the vibration in the head, because I can tune w/ the volume down. I don't know about other clip-on tuners. Also the TC tuners have 2 different display methods - they refer to them as chromatic or stroboscopic so you have some choices.
