Quality fruit

How is the fruit in your location. I've noticed that over here the last 10-15 years our fruit quality absolutely sucks.

Well today, I got a big shock to see a locally grown orange that's massive and I'm not kidding, you could only eat one and your cactus. And yes, it's juicy and top notch.

We have a tragic situation here where our local growers are having to bulldoze tons and tons of fruit into the ground because they can't sell it.

What I don't get is that the quality of this produce is such a huge margin above the trash we are sold at the markets now. At least in Melbourne.

Australia has some very good growing regions such in South Australia and Northern Victoria, NSW and Queensland comes our killer bananas and pineapple.

I bought these oranges today which I haven't seen available here since about 1985 for $0.99c/Kg as good as 50c pound.

Are people really this cheap that they'd rather pay very small amount less to eat trash. Yet, are happy to spend reasonable amounts eating biologically hazardous takeout?

I really feel sorry for farmers who bust their chops growing good food and getting paid nothing for it because the supermarkets want that extra margin. Why not stock both and let the consumer choose.

Hi, mlowe

Here in Finland we don't have that much local fruit as such due the climate but I do agree that the quality has gone down considerably with everything that's imported.

The global warming might do us a "favour" though  .

I blame the EU directives mostly, all those silly "how curved a cucumber can be" and "how full of water and big (and tasteless) a strawberry must be". But to be honest, us consumers are the ones to blame, the small and big markets sell what we buy. If there's a reasonable demand, there's sure as hell someone to supply that demand.

I'm not a fruit/vegetable person and it can be seen in my health, for me rabbit food is for animals to turn it to meat for me to eat (:D so I'm in a way vegetarian ;) ), but that has to change if I want to get my health back.

A bit off topic, the same is IMHO with our gear. We praise 'n buy certain total crap for a little bit less than quality from "local" manufacturers and suppliers. The blame is ours if we are left with less real choices in the future, when virtually all there is available is different levels of crap. And that applies to everything, not just food and musical gear.

Just my 0.02€

You know what? Last week I got some oranges from Coles. And they were GREAT! Fresh, juicy and tasty. :) Which is really something considering it comes from Coles, usually their fruit sucks.

Heh, I second that even though I work in the fruit & veg. department at the local Coles. I buy my fruit from the central markets in Adelaide, it's cheaper and there's much more choice, although the mandarins from Coles were quite good of late.

I live in a great fruit area  I have an orange tree on my property that produces AWESOME Valancia oranges. It was a tree that was originally part of the grove that was here before the house was built. I cut down my grapefruit tree because it was HUGE and the falling grapefruits were damaging my roof and gutters. We don't eat much grapefruit but if we want some there are plenty about 50 feet away in my neighbors yard!!

We also have fantastic strawberries and a good supply of peaches from Georgia. Plenty of Tomotoes and other veggies as well.

The only thing I miss is good fresh apples and cider from New York :hmm:

Your a lucky dude because from memory Adelaide, and up to Mildura produces imo the best oranges and few other fruits. I still remember my first time drinking nippies while in SA. We don't get it here and I couldn't believe the difference. There must be good soil in SA cause that's so I hear were the best wine comes from too.

As for Florida, I have actually heard over here about how good the fruit is there. I guess the weather doesn't hurt.

An Finland, man you may not get the local fruit but I hear the fish is good there. My wife is from Finland and saunas/snow. You guys are crazy! But smart.

We have a pretty good selection and pretty good quality, but I have noticed that the price is going up as the tack things like "organic" and stuff on it. We have quite a few good local produce stands around here. Good quality fruits and vegetables. They don't last as long though, cuz of lack of preservatives, but I'd rather buy less more frequently in exchange for quality.
