Quest for the elusive Muff

That's the Muff I use. I refuse to sell it, and it's been with me since I started playing when I was 16. I've tried other muffs out there...some are pretty good...but this one just has the tone I like.

Yea I agree. Green Russian has got so much hair and ballz! Just the perfect Muff. The only thing I hate is it doesn't fit in my pedaltrain pt-1 because it's too tall for the case to close over it. Do you know any solutions to this problem? I just end up having to carry it in my bag and then hook it up to the rest of my board each time I set up, which is sort of a pain in the ass. I've been wondering about what others have done to deal with this pedals "tallness".

Its sorta funny to see the same people bring up the same muff when asked time and time again. Thats when you should realize, we all have to find the one that works best for us in our setup/rig. Ive tried a handful and the ones I named earlier, the Vick and Big Game, are the ones that topped the heap of them. The EAND seriously rips in the mix and adds a boost of bottom. So when its stomped, you know it, it is not getting lost in any mix whatsoever.

I still want to try/own a real Greenie. I dont think Ive seen many guys that have said "man that thing sucked in the mix and sounded horrid". Its usually the exact opposite almost all the time. I will have one someday.

I'm also a Big Muff fan. If you like the traditional muff vibe, wren and cuff really has that on lockdown. The box of war sounds outstanding on bass. I find it weird that you don't see that on more bass boards. His tri pie 70 is also an excellent old school sounding muff.
As far as newer muffs, that have mid knobs among other features, the Musket is great. I also got to play the deluxe hail satan and the big game "eand" last week. I loved the Hail satan. Sounded huge. The Big Game was cool. But I feel like it's ok to mention that it's just a grey stache. Down to the mods and even the knobs. But I'm pretty sure the builder is open about that. I think they are both great clones of the ggg/civil war muff.

I'm not sure. For my use it doesn't matter either. I use a short scale passive with Chrome flats. That's my thing. I do tend to use the bridge humbucker and roll the tone knob up and it makes a noticeable difference.

The only reason I asked was because I'm playing a stingray with super slinky roundwounds, and without effects cut through clean as a whistle - thought the getting lost in the mix thing would be less of an issue with a bass sound like that.

How about the Grey Stache by Fuzzroccious? What do you think about this one?

When I first decided on a Muff it was actually a toss up between the TFR and the Greystache. I decided on the Tall Font because of simplicity (at the time it was my first pedal). I'll have to revisit Fuzzrocious.

The Big Game was cool. But I feel like it's ok to mention that it's just a grey stache. Down to the mods and even the knobs.

This seems right.

Initial thoughts: two different beasts. Need lots of time with this one.

Excellent group of pedals there. I'd say thats all you need (as I look over at my rack of 61 pedals, lol). Curious to hear what you think of the civil unrest. The Box Of War is the closest Ive gotten to @Phillyfunk original Sovtek Civil War. But I've had only good experiences with the SUF pedals. If the wren and cuff dude has a big muff doctorate degree the SUF def has his masters.

*this is just after about 90 minutes of noodling and twisting knobs by myself.

Even though they both sound like Muffs they are so different. The Tall Font is much smoother with more bass and an even frequency range. I leave mine at distortion max and tone 1 o'clock. The Tall Font was punchier in the bass and altogether tighter in controlling the distortion.

The Civil Unrest has more gain on tap with about 3 o'clock to match the attack of the TFR. It also has more volume, 8 o'clock CU = 12 Tall Font. This would make the SUF much better suited for actual fuzz instead of the overdrive/distortion I would like to use it for. The frequency is noticeably less heavy in the bass but can be brought back with the tone knob without being muddy because the highs are much more pronounced. And I'm not sure how I feel about the mids knob. That will have to wait until band practice. There are a ton usable tones in this box, but I haven't been able to match the Tall Font. I prefer the Wren & Cuff but already know the SUF is going to cut in the mix.

*edited for clarity as I am slightly more awake now.

Is this a typical comparison between these two?
What are other 'smooth, round, lower gain' Muffs?

I think the Wren & Cuff Box Of War would be a better match for the SUF Civil Unrest as both are 'Civil War' Muff based. I've not had a Civil Unrest but I had the SUF Civil War and W&C Box Of War. Both are fantastic.

If you want a smoother, lower gain Muff look for a 'Ram' based Muff. Stomp Under Foot makes a clone, and of course the JHS Muffuletta has a Ram's Head...along with a Pi, a Sovtek and a few Civil War's. That's why I love having the Muffuletta. I'm not stuck with just one version.

I have a V4 that rules, a green russian clone that rules, I've been toying with the idea of buying a Deluxe Bass Big Muff since it has so many options, but I figure I'll wait until I can find one used on a craigslist flip....

EDIT: Blend knob!! That's what I'm interested in with that one
