Quest for the elusive Muff

I love the Muff. It's the only kind of overdrive/fuzz that will always be on my board.

My first and only Muff so far is a Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian. It was chosen based on the positive reviews here and elsewhere. I can say that it sounds perfect as an overdrive but gets a little lost in the mix at higher distortion levels, a known trait common to the circuit.

Now I want to find what for me is the perfect Muff (I'm not really certain what that is). I have a Stomp Under Foot Civil Unrest coming my way thanks to an unlikely accepted offer on Reverb. My plan is to do a comparison and flip one to fund a COG Grand Tarkin to do battle with the winner of this round.

I think this would be a good time to get a cheap recording setup and share with you guys too. Any help on that front would be welcome (I know nothing) and any other input as well. Has anyone done this?

I love my ehx civil war..and even though people seem to knock them for bass, My '79 v3 muff is killer also. Also just scored a boss ls-2 in the TB classifieds to blend a little clean in with the fuzz and its pretty killer

JHS Muffuletta. Get all the Muffs in one box! I love this bad boy. Of course I've had most of the others as well and loved them too. My other stand out favorites were the Wren & Cuff Box of War and Stomp Under Foot Civil War. But that Muffuletta is just so darn versatile and just drips with muffy goodness.

Man that muffuletta does seem pretty awesome. That good huh?

My green Sovtek and black Sovtek work well whether isolated or being tracked, and, as was mentioned a few posts ago, an LS2 can easily put you back in the mix with more of your dry (base/bass!) signal blended back in. In a loud and crowded live setting, an eq boost in the 600-750 range and another in the 1.7-ish range also help, with my current cab setup.

I've been loving my TFR but I have noticed I have to really crank the volume to get it to be heard. Its got a glorious tone. I've wanted to try the SUF Civil War but in due time, I'm good in the muff department for now.

It's gooood. Great thing is all the different Muffs within. Sometimes you want higher gain or lower gain, sometimes you want brighter or darker...they're all there. Normally I like a Civil War Muff, but I find that running by B7K into one overloads it and turns it to mush. On the Muffuletta I just switch to a lower gain Muff and it kills. It's also nice being able to use different ones for guitar.

How's the low end the majority of them?? Is the green/Black Russian the only one it's good on? I was GASn hard for the muffuletta when I first heard about it. But it died pretty quickly, I'm very happy with my fuzz n muff selections at the moment. Didn't see the alarm to spend almost $300 on new muff. Even if it has like 5 of them in one.
