Question for Schroeder users

I'm still searching for the right cabinet to bring out the best in my Ampeg V4b. There are a number of canidates including the Berg, Bag End, Orange and Schroeder. I'm hoping to be able try out a few of these at the Madison GTG that's coming up but in the meantime I'm curious if anyone is using a tube head w/ their Schroeder cabinet? If so what head, what cab? I'm particularly interested in the 1515. Any thoughts on the combination are certainly appreciated.

FWIW, I play mostly soul music from the 60's and early 70's so I'm looking for a nice full warm tone.

Hey, Pedro! I use the 1212L and it sounds great with Ampeg heads (SVT-II, and 3... only ones I've tried). Very big, round low-mids... Killer for the tone you're looking for.

However, The Berg NV215 is worth trying for sure. I've only run an Aguilar 500sc through it but it sounded like all of my favorite bass tones from the 60's-70's era.

The Acoustic 106 is another cab that you might want to consider... Mine is a 1970 model so it's definately got that big round tone, also. You can find these for about $100 on ebay/Craigslist. Great cab for the $ and sounds incredible. Plus they look soooo cool :cool:

Thanks for the feedback on the subject. Yea the Berg 2x15 probably sounds great but the weight gives me concerns. As for the old Acoustics well you know I'm big fan of Acoustic but get the models all screwed up. Seems to me that Acoustic made 2 different model 2x15 cabs. I had a chance at the deeper of the two a year or two ago but thought they were asking too much money. BTW, is the 1212L the same as the 1515 with 12" drivers?

Not even remotely close! Look at the specs and pictures on the Schroeder website.

Pedro, all I can recommend is that you talk to Jorg directly. He has far more experience with different amp/cab combinations than anyone here. That said, the V4B/1210R setup sounded pretty cool to me for an old school-ish rock sound. But I'm definitely not a fan of tube amps for bass applications for what I do...so what do I know? :cool:

Who here thinks that a Marshall VBA400 tube amp would work with a 21012 or a 410? I always thought that tube amps should really be used with sealed cabs because (as far as I understand it anyway) tube amps sound too loose (as opposed to tight) if you use a ported cab.

I really like the idea of a small, light and loud cab as hauling an 8x10 up and down stairs all the time does *not* excite me!

Would you consider Schroeders to be ported, cos that big hole in the 410 sure looks like one, or does the design make it act like a sealed "infinite baffle" cabinet?

+ another vote for the 1212. I'm using a Sansamp RBI to emulate old rock/blues tube amps - Fender Bassman and Ampeg SVT - through a Crown power amp. The 1212 sounds exactly like I want it to sound, it cuts its own space in the onstage mix better than anything else I've ever used, and I have received way more compliments since getting it than I expected. Full, round sound with enough low grunt and those fantastic low mids. I set the tweeter pad at about 25% - a little bit more if the room is really dead (acoustically, that is).

Hi. When I spoke to Jorg, he recommended NOT using a tube head with his cabs and that a SS amp will work better because it has more attack. I have a Mesa 400+ and did not like the tone I got when running it through a 21012 or 410L. I have both an Eden wtx-260 and WT-405 and like it MUCH better.

My buddy Funkster runs a SVT into a 6x10 Berg and loves it.
He leaves the Ampeg 8x10 cab at home all 125 lbs of it and
the Berg runs about 90 or so.

I have the Acoustic 106 2 x15 cab (that was the cab paired with the
140 head -together called 146). It is a ported design with 2 Eminence
speakers. It sounds great with the 140 SS head, but I don't know about
a tube amp on it. The deal breaker is that it is 135 lbs.

I was at Funkster's place Saturday and he noted that Jim
Bergantino voiced the box to an original SVT. In your
shoes I'd check the sealed design Bergie first.

I recently used a 66 Blackface Fender Bassman in the studio with my 21012L mic'd and it sounded incredible. Had the volume on 5, bass on 5, treble on 4 on the guitar side. FAT!!!!

I love my 1212R. I keep coming back to it after trying different cabs. I usually have it vertical as I can usually here it better that way, but there is a noticeable low-end boost when its set horizontal, as its designed. When I'm on a big stage I put it horizontal, but usually I'm on small stages and thus its vertical.

One caution is that the 1212 does NOT have a huge pant flappin' low-end. Its voiced to the low-mids. When playing in a band mix I actually prefer this as it cuts thru like a mo-fo.

I have never tried the bigger cabs, but I've owned the small schroes a couple years ago and much prefer the 1212R. The older mini 12s are quite midrangey. Apparently the new minis are better, but I havent heard them.
