QUICK: Three Mid freqs!

Gimme suggestions for three selectable Mid frequencies for a distortion pedal EQ. I was thinking 250, 500 and 1000 or something, just off the top of my head. What are the most musical, or just widely used Middle bands on bass EQs?

I'd experiment with the middle number (750Hz, 800Hz, 500Hz, etc.).

i think the middle one should be 800, just because i really like a crunchy distortion.

I'd go for either 250 or 400hz, 800hz, and 1200hz myself. 800hz IME is the sweet spot for distortion and general presence in the mix.

Would the "punch" frequency be somewhere near 250, depending on the bass? Or is that too low to avoid overlapping wit the Bass freq? I think 1K should definitely be in there, probably as high as it should go. Where does 1.2K fall in descriptive tone terms? Keep 'em coming, but we may have it...

From what I've usually seen, those lower mids are considered the "body", with higher mids as the "punch."

personally i like where you're going initially. those are close to the frequencies i dial in on my rpm when tweaking for different purposes.

Yes! But you know, I feel like that switch would never get any use because I'd always have the Demonic freqs boosted way up!

Isn't 1K where a lot of "clack" and string rattle is? I've read that the Fender bass sound is in that range, but for a distortion EQ... 400, 800, and 1200? Or something like 350, 800, 1200? A good spacing between them seems like it'd be necessary to make all three switch positions useful and varied. AND: Which frequencies would be for boosting,a nd which for cutting?

As a contrast, the Low and High Mids on the Aguilar AG500 are 400 and 800, or 600 and 800, and they're too close together to be very musical to me. I might have to hook up my Funk tonight and play some distortions through it, though I really only have fuzzes right now, while tweaking the semi-parametric mids. Any more suggestions would be wonderful, and any bassist reviews of the Toneczar Dove would be helpful as well (with stock or custom mid frequencies).

According to the metal-bass-playing thread, your clack exists between 1.5 kHz and 2.5 kHz. I also found that this depends on your bass itself (woods, pups, etc.). I have a Zon Sonus Custom with a 3-band mid-switch: 250, 400, and 700. If you're looking for high-gain from purely the mids, then go with something around 700. I don't get too much clack from that spot, even at really high boost. I should mention here that I've got the really-wide aperture dual-coil Barts. However, I've gotten a nice grind/drive by boosting at 250 and rolling the blend back to the bridge pup. The unfortunate part of this is that if you have poor technique, you will hear everything. Also, it can be extraordinarily overwhelming. If not properly mic'd, and depending on your amp's settings, the audience can kiss the kick drum goodbye.

So the Blowtorch is sporting 250, 750, and 2K. Anyone want to chime in on how they like those freqs, or if they'd change them? If you guys DO like those frequencies, do you usually boost of cut? I hear Boost for 800, and for 250? Would the 2K be a cut situation? Keep bringing it on, especially impressions of the Blowtorch mid shift. Of course I'll also search!

2k seems a little high to me. My new amp (Peavey Max115) has a shiftable mid that goes from 200 to 2k, with 1k @ noon. 1k seems high enough IMO, and my last amps mid was 800 and provided a nice sound IMHO. The 200 adds way to much volume as it approaches the bass freqs too. Just something to keep in mind. I have it set somewhere around the 600 mark.

I say go for 500, 750 and 1k (or somewhere around those #s), and allow cut or boost.

I'm going to venture a guess that 750 and 800 are close enough as to not have a huge difference between one another. That being the case, I may experiment with 500, 800, and 1K. Last call for suggestions before I start setting things in stone! Thanks!

RE: The Blowtorch mid shifting. Here are my general opinions:

• Boosting at 2KHz rocks (it's part of my live Blowtorch setting). For cutting, it depends on the rest of the EQ.
• Boosting and cutting at 750Hz produce great results.
• Boosting at 250Hz is too boomy on the Blowtorch and not pleasant. Cutting, however, produces good results.

i'd want a distortion/parametric EQ pedal, personally. like, three or four sweepable mid-freq knobs, each with cut/boost capabilities.

is there one? bongo? mystic? anyone?
