Double Bass Quilter Bass Block With Double Bass

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has tried a Quilter Bass Block with a Double Bass?
I play Rockabilly and Swing.
The BB looks amazing but there are no reports or Youtube videos with double bass.

i use one for upright bass and love it. the preamp controls do exactly what the pictures show. lately im using the bass block with my upshot. super small, light and loud when needed. i always use a preamp first because of the piezo, so the tone controls on the quilter are just for fine tuning to the room for me.

Controls:
GAIN CONTROL MUTE BUTTON (with red warning LED)
DEPTH CONTROL (100Hz Hi-Q bass control)
CONTOUR CONTROL (Low-mid scoop, flat, treble cut)
MASTER CONTROL (adjusts peak power from 0 to 800W)

DEPTH CONTROL The DEPTH control is a highly selective low frequency boost/cut that acts only on the lowest half of the bass guitar’s range. Boosting DEPTH will produce a deep rounded tone. If pushed into limiting, the overtones and higher notes will “catch up” with the bass foundation, preserving dynamics and attack without bottoming out.

CONTOUR CONTROL The higher strings and harmonics are shaped in two distinct directions. Turning to the left introduces a mid scoop that produces a crisp snappy tone. Turning to the right progressively reduces treble for a rounded vintage tone.

I use the Quilter Tone Block 200 For upright like a power amp. I do all tone shaping on my pre-amp (tonedexter) and leave the tone block flat and the input set to line. This amp was sold as a clean amp to take pedals and pre-amps for guitar, but works quite well for bass.

My son uses a Quilter BB800 through an EA VL-208 cabinet for his double bass. Sounds spectacular!

I use a BassBlock 800. I do not use or need a preamp. I almost always leave the two middle knobs at 12 o'clock. I crank the master and keep the gain low when using a piezo to prevent feedback, but now I'm using a Krivo mag pickup that is no problem. I previously used GK heads, and over the last 30 years have used Trace, SWR, Ampeg, Mesa, and the GK were the best until I got the Quilter. Quilter blows the whole lot out of the water. My brother also plays upright through a Quilter with no preamp and also says it's the best he's ever had. Both of us play through 2 1x12 cabs, his Bergantino and mine Barefaced. BTW: I play rockabilly, Americana, jazz standards, Latino and various other genres.

I have a BB800 which I just got, Been using a GK 800RB with 210 and 115 Hartke XL for EB. Am playing URB and EUB now. Ordered a pair of MAS 1,8"s and Grace Alix but Mas 1,8"s not here yet. Temporarily using just amp with 210 Hartke (not ideal) which is great as a mid-high for EB, not so much for URB and EUB...have to crank bass and cut mid-highs on Bass Block to get anything resembling acoustic sound. Will report back when all equipment comes in and tried at several gigs. So far though despite lack of ideal eq (imho), bass block is rich, punchy when needed and easy to figure out.

I sat in with a friend's band a few months back. The bassist had the Quilter head and cab. It sounded really good for both DB and BG (I only played his DB).

The EQ is indeed odd. The "depth" control is a HPF when set below 12:00 and a bass boost when set above. The "contour" control is a mid scoop when set below 12:00 and a treble rolloff when set above. If you're used to dialing in complex EQ with graphics, parametrics, etc. this requires a new mindset. It's actually very logical when you thnk about it, but in rooms that are acoustical nightmares it could be an issue. Over many years I've found I usually don't tweak my EQ much from room to room, so this sort of EQ is appealing to me.

Thanks for the responses guys, I currently use a G&K 800RB which i love. But i had a failure in my Cabinet when the speakers became scratchy (if that's a word?) So i purchased 4 Eminence speakers. The agent in Brisbane who i bought the speakers from is a re-seller and is going to loan me a BB 800 so i am very keen to give it a run. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Reviving this thread, because I have a BB800 and maybe I could use it with the DB.


Right now I have a Realist Piezo direct to the PA.

Can I use the BB800 and go from there to the PA?

DB - BB800 - PA?

If so, should I plug into the active or passive input?

What about the connection to the PA? What OUT should I use?

And cable? Normal jack or XLR?
