Quirky Boost Shoot Off?

I've been kind of wondering how the Submarine would compare to the Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso or the Varioboost. What are some other pedals like these? (i.e. A boost that should affect your tone rather than just being a clean/dirty boost.)

I may try to get Brad from Tonefactor to lone me some again...

Just something I've been chewing on lately.

Of course, I may not be able to get one of all of these to test, but we'll see.

If I can't get all of these and you have one, I would appreciate it if I could borrow it just for the shootout.

I may not get to do this for a week or two; I'm going out of town. It won't be long, though...

HAO rustboost is a cool one, but it isn't a clean boost, turn the boost knob past 3 o'clock and you get a this cool crumply OD. I have two of the things, and picked the last one up on el-bay for like $40.

The LPB-1 isn't anything but a clean boost. Micro Amp isn't anything but a dirty boost - as is the Rustboost. I'm looking for things that are supposed to add some beneficial characteristic to your tone.

Not a clean or dirty boost... unless they're supposed to do something cool.

Ok gotcha. So would the Z. Vex Super Hard On qualify for you? This is taken from the Z. Vex website:

"Most vintage guitars suffer from steadily deteriorating magnets in their pickups, since permanent magnets aren't really forever. The Super Hard-On's input impedance is so high (>5 Meg) that it refuses any current flow from your pickup... maintaining the most magnetic field around each string, so you can hear exactly what your pickup sounded like the day it came off the winder."

I don't think a high input impedence is as interesting as he makes it out to be, but whatever. There's also a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster, but I think it's extra functions are more guitar oriented.

Yeah, the Seymour Duncan didn't really tickle my fancy.

And I'll let you be in charge of giving me a Hard On. They're far too expensive for me to play with in my shoot out.

Maybe the Behringer Preamp Booster will fit your price range better?

But seriously now that I think of it I do own Boxes of Rock and the boost on that is based on the Super Hard On (although apparently less glassy) and it doesn't do anything quirky on bass as you'd say anyway so you're not missing anything.

Also I think the boost section on the HBE Hematoma is worth a mention. It doesn't do a whole lot of boost but it does change your tone significantly.

A Big Muff is a reeeeeealllly dirty boost if you turn the volume up

The Nick Greer sonic boom is basically LPB-1s that cost $100 more.

It would seem that most clean boosts are variations on the Jack Orman Mosfet boost and Mini-booster, the Micro Amp and the LPB-1 so it might be worth getting the originals as a sort of control.
