Quitting bass

That's it! I'm buying a dadgum apple shaker... thing.

(Do they make one with a tube preamp?)

See what you've started, woman?????
:nailbiting:

I’m a little surprised there aren’t any electrified ones considering how easy they’d be to make, though looking for one did turn up this cool thing.

I settle for shaking mine into a vocal mic to give it a little ‘verb.

Everything is better with ‘verb.

I refuse to understand, and insist you continue to play bass.

You'll thank me someday.

I want an apple shaker for my shaker collection. But you should keep your bass, so you can continue posting on TB.

Oh, I’d never give away my bass. I love her dearly, and my apple adventures will still need some low end and melody. Quitting bass was *mostly* a joke, but I’m coming to terms with the fact that I don’t need to be an incredible bass hero to be a musician, since I’m a fair harmonicist and taking to my other trinkets readily. Found a toy glockenspiel a few days ago and I’m having a blast incorporating that, too. I’ll stick around, and continue developing as a bass player- and, more importantly, continue to post.

Why would it be offensive? Mansplaining is offensive when someone does it, not when the offended party describes it.

I'm a man and I don't find it offensive. But that's because I'm a man. It is hard to offend me. :)

By far the last thing I want to accomplish is sparking yet another gender politics debate. We’ve all got strong opinions on the topic, certainly, but this is a topic for apples and the shaking thereof!

In any case, thank you all for your support and kindness. You guys rule. c:

It's a movement!

It is the song of my people!

Now I want a shaker too...

Think there's one shaped like a milk bottle?
Then I could do that Kelis song!

That’s a fantastic idea! I can’t imagine any custom instrument being easier to make than a milk bottle shaker- not only can you pick your ideal shaker material, you can rep your favorite milk too!

What about melons?

Hm...

Yes. I’ll allow it.

I can tell you from experience that all you would need is a baby bottle and some corn or bb’s or whatever and there you go. The strangest shaker I ever made was a martini shaker full of ice and water that I used on a recording session. It sounded very sloshy and drunk.

Ever since the Soul Sushi I just feel kind of protective. That's probably a gender thing unto itself...

You know I REALLY wanted to let the "mansplaining" thing go, but Talkbass is such a great space and one of the few places that is refreshingly devoid of "victim/identity politics".
OP, maybe you don't realize how offensive the term is. Fair enough. But, I've got to say that I am not cool with a slur that attempts to point up an inherent flaw in ALL men as to how they communicate in a malicious manner towards women because it's simply not true. And, if you would not single out another identifiable group and write, for example, Womansplaining, Jewsplaining, Blacksplaining, Arabsplaining, Asiansplaining, Muslimsplaining, NativeAmericansplaining, Transsplaining, Gaysplaining, Christiansplaining, etc., then it is not OK to do this to men.

DON'T TELL ME I DON'T KNOW A RAGE QUIT WHEN I SEE ONE , YOUNG LADY!

It's not a slur.

  1. (of a man) explain (something) to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing.

This is a clever apple. It's the attaching of a habit to men that makes it sexist generalization. Like "Femgineering". "Mansplaining"... Why not just "Splaining"? These are sexist terms. I'm not "hurt" by them, IDGAF really, but I call them like I see them. These kinds of phrases don't help anyone. Move along, nothing to see.
-Back on topic:
I have a banana shaker. It sounds great but everybody makes suggestive jokes when I play it. I put a Dole sticker on it to add to the realism. The egg shaker gets more use because there are no bad jokes to endure.
When I record a track that has shakers, I take different little containers and fill them with dried goods(beans, rice, etc) and record them, because they really do all sound a little bit different. I know it's cliche, but I'd like to have a fruit bowl of shakers in my studio coffee/break space.
I have no ill will towards @Chicory Blue . This is not a war thread. It's a shaker thread.

I couldn't disagree more. It's totally necessary, and being offended by the use of correct terminology while calling for people not to be offended is ridiculous.

I am calling this out on this thread. Mansplaining is a legitimate term for behavior that is offensive. No one is implying all men do it. I don't do it. But posters to this thread are forcing me to do some mansplainingsplaining.

Not here. Not now.
